Guyana bans music of no-show Jamaican singer

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The state-owned radio network in Guyana says a Jamaican dance-hall singer has been banned from the airwaves of the South American country because of obscene lyrics.

National Communications Network spokesman Martin Goolsarran says the music of Vybz Kartel was banned because it brings "nothing positive" to the entertainment industry. He said Wednesday that the decision came after a week of internal debate and said they are reviewing the lyrics of other musicians and could ban them as well.

This is the first time that the government has taken such action against a specific artist. Vybz Kartel angered local music promoters and the Tourism Ministry last month when he failed to show up at a government-supported summer music festival.

JAH CURE AXED FROM MOBO LIST OF NOMINEES

Reggae singer Jah Cure has reportedly been removed from this year's MOBO Awards 'Best Reggae Act' category.

According to www.thesun.co.uk, Jah Cure was removed from this year's MOBO awards nominations because he was previously convicted and spent time in prison. According to the website, "organisers said they acted after being told about the conviction and 'severity of the crime". This would have marked the artiste's first time getting nominated for a MOBO award.

In 1999, Jah Cure, real name Siccature Alcock, was prosecuted at 19 years old for gun possession, rape and robbery. After serving time, he was released in 2007. Since his release, Jah Cure has topped the music charts with three number-one singles. It started with Call On Me, featuring his label mate Phyllisia, followed with You'll Never Find, and Unconditional Love.

Checks made by THE STAR to the awards website, www.mobo.com, showed that only Alborosie, Khago, Mavado, Damian Marley featuring Nas were voting options in the 'Best Reggae Act' category. Efforts to reach Jah Cure, who is currently off the island, proved futile. A representative from his team said that they have no comment on the matter adding, "right now we're just working, promoting and producing good music and focused on his tours coming up".

Last year, Gyptian won in the reggae category at the awards against acts such as Damian Marley, Mavado, Vybz Kartel and Gappy Ranks. This year, the awards will be held on October 5 at the SECC Glasgow in Scotland.

Launched in 1996 by founder and CEO Kanya King MBE, the MOBO Awards were the first awards show in Europe to celebrate urban music. The awards attract the largest prime-time multicultural audience in Europe, due in no small part to the fact that MOBO has played host to the music industry's finest. Over the years, artistes have included Janet Jackson, Diddy, Mark Ronson, Dionne Warwick, Tina Turner, Jay- Z, LL Cool J, Amy Winehouse, Usher and John Legend, to name a few.

This is not the first controversial MOBO nomination in the reggae category. Reggae acts Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man were both axed in 2004 in a row over homophobic lyrics.

Last month, the singer made headlines when he wed girlfriend Kamila McDonald in a small wedding ceremony at the Tryall Club, close to where the singer was born. He is currently working on the release of his next album.

BEENIE MAN HEARTBROKEN BY DIVORCE FROM D’ANGEL

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall artiste, Moses "Beenie Man" Davis has gone into greater detail regarding his separation from his wife of 5 years,Michelle "D'Angel" Downer; implying that he is heartbroken by their recent marital issues.
Beenie Man told TVJ's EMix that he initially intended to divorce D'Angellast year but the couple constantly resolved their issues and ended up back together. However, the "King of the Dancehall" intimated that D'Angel's decision not to appear at his birthday party almost two weeks ago was the last straw; made worse by the fact D'Angel went to former rival, Bounty Killer's birthday party earlier this summer.
"Regardless a if mi and her have a divorce agreement to deal wid, I think she shudda still come a my birthday because mi is her husband and me is Marco Dean father, so why should you call me and tell me pon my phone seh yuh a go to Bounty Killer birthday party, when Bounty Killer disrespect you so much in the media and call yuh di worst tings,” Beenie said. Bounty Killer, formerly was in a relationship with D'Angel, engaged in a lyrical battle with Beenie Man regarding the "Blaze" singer in 2006.
Given that factor, Beenie suggested that he could no longer take the emotional toll their issues had on him; asking D'Angel to send the divorce papers that would finally put an end to their rollercoaster marriage. "Mi jus' decide seh, Please mi a beg yuh, jus’ finish mi heartache and mi hurt, just please mi a beg yuh, jus’ sen di divorce papers," Beenie stated. D'Angelsent the divorce papers two days later and released a statement clarifying that she sent them and that they could no longer co-exist as a couple.
Despite their constant arguments Beenie explained that he and D'Angel tried several times to put their differences aside but now he implores it's time to sever ties for good. "With all due respect, mi love and respect mi wife but love and respect don't really cut it when di person don't gi yuh back di same amount of love that you give them," Beenie implied; re-enforcing that he will not marry again following this ordeal and will focus on raising his son, Marco Dean and his other children. Additionally, Beenie believes that even though he's hurting from the divorce, D'Angel is more relieved and free as a result of their permanent separation.
Fan reaction to Beenie and D'Angel's breakup has been critical of the pairing since news of their impending break-up was made public two weeks ago; many of them claiming the couple were never a good fit to start with. Some female fans, when asked by EMix about the divorce, lauded D’Angel's ability to get what she could out of the marriage. Other observers suggested that Beenie should never have gone after her in the first place given that she was Bounty's ex-girlfriend.
