LADY SAW DROPS FIRST SINGLE FROM NEW ALBUM

Great party vibes, walk-out and never get tired, girls’ anthem and independent woman are all saucily packaged in Party Til December, the frolicking. lead-off single from Lady Saw’s soon-to-be-released album, My Way, on her new label, Divas Records/Toasting Music/Universal.
Armed with a rollicking, uptempo riddim, Lady Saw, steps to it as only she can and with one press of a button fires off lyrics which are sure to have all the single ladies – and some of those ‘in a relationship’ – making that quantum leap from the boredom of a bedroom to the dazzle of a dance floor. And, as infectious as the riddim is, Party Til December is one of those songs that make the listener also want to hear the lyrics.
Perhaps it’s Lady’s Saw’s delivery which oozes with confidence, coupled with her ability to ride a riddim and her experience as a smooth toaster that give this single its appeal.
According to Saw, who wears her producer hat on this track from the album, due in stores September 7, Party Till December was one of the first songs she did for the album and while working on the project it was her favourite, until it was replaced by others.
“I thought the record company would have chosen one of the combination singles, perhaps the one with Eve or Ding Dong, because those are really nice tracks. So I was surprised when they selected Party Till December as the lead-off single,” she explained, adding that she was pleased nonetheless.
Saw surmised that the single’s crossover potential could have played a role in the decision-making process. Party Till December is quite a club banger and is also a true girls’ anthem, the type which has been gaining popularity with fans internationally.
On the track, she dishes out with loads of attitude, this body’s too hot to be at home just kicking back, after which she informs that, she’s got her own money, her own ride and her bills are paid. So what does an independent single girl with a man who wants her back supposed to do? Well Saw gives an option -- with a new attitude and a killa hairstyle, let’s party till December
The album, My Way, also has productions from Tony 'CD' Kelly, Lloyd 'John John' James, Danny Browne and Stephen McGregor. Among the other tracks are Every Way Mi Go, Your Chick, He Is At My House (Feat. Eve), My Way, Me Hold Yuh, Muscle Control (Feat. Camar) and I Can’t Wait (Feat. Ding Dong).

WASP HAPPY WITH HIS CAREER DIRECTION AND NEW VIDEO

Dancehall deejay, Wasp, is happy with the path his career is currently taking. With his management structure falling into place and a growing repertoire of conscious tunes, the artiste is confident of success.
“When you do a conscious song in the dancehall it is so different from doing a regular song. The life span is longer and it has a wider appeal,” the artiste declared.
Wasp used the example of his single Unfair Officer, which was a hit for him in 2009 and which is still getting its fair share of props almost one year later. He also mentioned that singer I-Octane, the fast-rising standard bearer of culture, owes his growing success to conscious lyrics, “not the three-day old dancehall hype”.
“And the thing is that the elders like it and the kids are also singing it,” he said of his no-holds-barred hit Unfair Officer hit, adding that the impact was the same with his previous single, Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youths.
“A lady who is almost 90 told me that she liked the song,” he said, still sounding amazed.
Now that those songs have been tested and proven, the deejay is focused on the Daseca-produced single Nutten Nah Gwaan. Wasp does straight to the heart of the matter with this song, a combination with the proclaimed First Lady of Daseca, Raine Seville
This single touches a nerve and looks set to edge Wasp closer to his ultimate goal – staking his claim on a portion of the dancehall pie.
“I wrote it on the way going to Old Harbour one day when I saw the people selling at the street and realized that nutten really nah gwaan. Raine and I met up at Carib and chatted a bit and she said she like the song Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youth and suggested that we do a song together. The next day she called and I was only too happy to go in the studio, so I did a demo and took it to Daseca and the rest is history,” he laughed.
It was his first time working with the Daseca crew and Wasp has nothing but praises for their professionalism.
“Daseca dem professional and can bring my ideas to life. Working with Daseca you can’t be off key because they are musicians – all three of them play the keyboard. It’s a good learning experience, if you as the artiste are willing to learn,” he declared.
The video, which was directed by Danielle Dyer, had its premiere a few weeks ago and has since been receiving good rotation on Hype and Hit List.

IKAYA TO PERFORM AT JAMAICA DAY AND O’NEIL TRIBUTE IN TORONTO

Outtaroad artiste Ikaya, who is steadily making her presence felt on the music scene, makes her fourth visit to Canada this weekend, where she will be part of the celebratory Jamaica Day activities and then perform in the night at a tribute to slain Voicemail member, O’Neil Edwards.
The Jamaica Day celebrations should have taken place over the Independence weekend but had to be rescheduled owing to inclement weather, thus giving Ikaya a chance to participate on Saturday. The young artiste sees this as a perfect opportunity to multiply her fan base while waving the Jamaica flag high.
“Foreigners have a different kind of appreciation for artistes and Jamaica in general. And with the negative publicity that the island received recently, it is our duty as ambassadors to go out there and do whatever we can to show the positive things about Jamaica. And what is more powerful than music to accomplish this?” Ikaya asked.
She is also eagerly anticipating her performance later in the evening at Sleeveless and Jeans, a tribute dance to the late O’Neil Edwards, whose shooting death earlier this year sent shock waves throughout the music industry. The promoters feel that O’Neil’s contribution to the music should not ever be forgotten, hence this tribute months after his death.
Meanwhile, Ikaya had the premier of her video for the single “Hard Way” two weeks ago. Done under the direction of Scorpio 21, which is quickly developing a reputation for clean, high quality videos, Hard Way is simple and effective while evoking the necessary emotions.
Ikaya declared that she was extremely pleased at the way how the storyboard played out as the message in the song --- there are always dire consequences for wrong choices made -- is one that she feels passionately about, especially as it relates to teenage pregnancy. The storyline surrounds a young boy and girl who refuse to listen, resulting in the girl becoming a teenage mother.
The artiste recently turned in commendable performances at a A St Mary Mi Come From, the cultural show staged by Capleton; Guinness Summer Eclipse at The Jungle night club in Negril, Westmoreland and Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay.

LADY SAW DOES IT ‘MY WAY’

With the support of her very own record label, Divas Records, and additional backing from Toasting Music/Universal, the highly respected Grammy winner, Lady Saw, will roll out her latest album, My Way, on September 7.
My Way, the artiste declares, is more than just an album. It is a proclamation of intent, a decision and a reality. It heralds Lady Saw’s newfound independence, having severed ties with reggae label VP Records after her 2007 album, Walk Out, followed swiftly by her decision to launch Divas Records. My Way represents the dancehall pioneer at the height of her creativity as she spits out collabs with local and international artistes and takes the reigns as producer on a number of the tracks.
“After being in the business for over 15 years we know how to do it,” the triple-platinum selling artiste assures with her little girl smile that belies the depth of her sometimes over-the-top lyrics.
With nine albums under her belt and a secure slot in dancehall/rap history Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall brings her wealth of experience to this project. My Way rolls out an enviable list of high-profile producers, including Tony ‘CD’ Kelly, Danny Browne, Lloyd ‘John John’ James and Stephen McGregor. And it also sees Saw linking with international rapper Eve and homeboy dancer-turned-rapper, Ding Dong.
Lady Saw, who gained notoriety in the dancehall when her potent underground lyrics took on a life of their own and refused to be strapped down, has risen to the top of her game locally and has gone on to gain international stardom with dynamic collabs with artistes such as No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliot, Remy Ma, Trina, Nicki Minaj, Foxy Brown Michael Frantii and Pharrell Williams. It was the No Doubt collab, Underneath It All, that pushed Saw into the triple-platinum selling league and gained her a coveted Grammy award in the process.
My Way, a 16-track collection shows off the versatility of deejay Lady Saw and gives a glimpse into her alter ego, Marion Hall. Among the track listings are “Every Way Mi Go”, “Party Til December” , “Muscle Control”, “5 Minutes, “My Way” and “I Am A Woman” and “Me Hold Yuh,” the remix to Gyptian’s Billboard monster hit, “Hold You.
Earlier in her career, Lady Saw had done it ‘99 Ways’, this time around she is simply doing it ‘My Way’.

CE’CILE MINES ‘GOLD’ IN THE UK

BY KEVIN JACKSON

• CE’CILE... I don’t think Jamaica knows of half the stuff I’ve done over the years

ALTHOUGH Ce'Cile has been consistent in churning out hits locally (her most recent include Anything and Black Coffee), she has managed to score most of her mainstream successes outside of Jamaica.
Last year, she topped the German R&B Singles chart with Hot Like We and a few weeks ago Talk Talk mouthed its way to number 10.
Now Ce'Cile is hoping to strike it big in the UK as her collaboration Gold Dust with DJ Fresh has debuted in the number 24 spot on the UK pop singles chart. The success of the song has made the singer/deejay/producer an in-demand commodity.
"When I learnt that the song entered the charts, I noticed that a lot of producers began to contact me from the UK. So I figure that it must be as a result of the song's success. Even the artiste who was originally supposed to have recorded the song, she even made contact with me," an excited Ce'Cile said in an interview earlier this week.
Gold Dust is the first single off drum and bass and acid music producer DJ Fresh's sophomore album Kryptonite. British recording artiste Ms Dynamite was originally considered for the guest spot on Gold Dust.
Asked how the collaboration with DJ Fresh came about, Ce'cile explained "DJ Fresh contacted me via the Internet and he said he would love to do a song with me and that the song was already written."
Recorded in 2009, Ce'Cile said she never expected the song to become the hit that it has. "I had no high expectations neither did I expect it not to take off. I have always worked with huge producers in the UK, for example, Stanton Warriors. I did a song like six years ago called Slanty. I was also hired to do a collaboration with Estelle. I don't think Jamaica knows of half the stuff I've done over the years."
Ce'Cile said she has always tried to step outside of the box and do things differently as an artiste. "While everyone was going after America, I've always done the opposite of what everyone did. The people in Germany loved me the first time that I did German Splash and I ran with the love and capitalised on it. I was always working with producers in the UK because I had a publishing deal with Greensleeves as a producer, which I don't think that many Jamaicans realise that I am also a producer," Ce'Cile pointed out.
Added Ce'Cile, "I am always excited to work and overly excited by different genres of music. From the beginning of my career I have always told people that I am not a dancehall or reggae or a Jamaican artiste. I am an artiste and I do anything and I can rock anything."

WHAT’S ON NICKI MINAJ’S IPOD?

When she’s not popping up on records by everyone from M.I.A. to Trey Songz , Nicki Minaj is busy recording her debut album Pink Friday. So what does the Harajuku Barbie listen to during her downtime? Entertainment Weekly reveals the fierce females and familiar faces that make up her iPod playlist.

• Drake – “Find Your Love”
I love the entire album, but “Find Your Love” is like a movie. It reminds you of something, but you kind of don’t know what.

• Lil Wayne – Rebirth
I’m [a guest performer] on that one. And I just like that he was able to cross over into rock/pop a little bit. I’m a fan of when people do what you don’t expect.

• Mariah Carey
I always have Mariah for when I just feel like curling up in bed. On her last album, it’s “H.A.T.E.U.”

• Beyoncé – “Poison”
When I tell you it gives me life, like, it gives me life. Her voice is effortless. It’s badass, like, “I know I’m the best.” I love the melody, I love the cadence. It’s playful, but it’s just so in-your-face. It’s dope and it’s creative.

• Rihanna – Good Girl Gone Bad
I love “Sell Me Candy.” That’s one of my freakin’ favorites. Timbaland produced. I love that and “Rehab.”

I-OCTANE IN DEMAND AND MAKING MUSICAL STRIDES

Reggae's fastest rising cultural artiste, Byiome 'I-Octane' Muir, is poised to take his career to another level. The artiste boldly staked his claim on Dancehall Night at the recent Reggae Sumfest with a memorable performance and has consistently followed through since, entertaining his fans and silencing all detractors.

Quite in demand leading up to and during the Independence season, the reggae act -- who has been chosen by telecoms giant, Digicel, as one of the faces of the Next Generation -- performed at Eclipse Summer Invasion in Westmoreland, Mandela Park in St Andrew, Ocho Rios Seafood Festival, the annual Denbigh celebrations in Clarendon, the Independence show at Ken's Wildflower in Portmore and Manchester Fiesta in that parish.

It was at the recent Eclipse Summer Invasion in party capital, Negril, that I-Octane again set tongues wagging as he delivered what the audience agreed was a "big" performance. Coming on stage right after Aidonia, I-Octane went straight into a riveting set as he did songs such as Lose A Friend, My Life, Puff It, Mama and Take A Little Time. All these singles have been enjoying massive play on radio and in the dancehall, enabling fans of all ages to sing along with I-Octane word-for-word on many of his songs. As one 12-year-old female fan commented at the recent Stunt Festival at Police Officers Club in St Andrew, "I-Octane a mi boss ... mi know all him song dem."

I-Octane's popularity is undeniable and It has now become the norm for him to be heralded on stage by contagious shouts of approval, which, in many instances are sustained throughout his delivery."When the emcee mention I-Octane name, even the leaves on the trees rail fi him," is how singer Stevie Face once summed it up.
Quite happy at the movement of his career, I-Octane, whose ready smile is part of his charm, noted that he is just doing what he does best, "making good music and entertaining fans".

And entertaining fans is exactly what he did when he performed on General Degree's Manchester Fiesta on August 7. Taking the stage after many of reggae/dancehall's big names, I-Octane, who was called up by Konshens, was in a no-nonsense mood.
"Nuff man come up here looking forward," he declared, "but I bet I can sing one song and get all five forwards," he challenged the hyped up crowd.
I-Octane then the unleashed the song Puff It, whose lyrics contain the word "forward" several times. The crowd loved it.

With the busy Independence season behind him, I-Octane is looking to spread his wings and land on the international circuit in what is anticipated to be a hectic Christmas season.

IKAYA'S PERFORMANCES PLACE HER ON A MUSICAL HIGH

Dancehall deejay Ikaya is on a musical high following her commendable performances at a number of events, most recent of which was at St Mary Mi Come From, the cultural show staged by acclaimed fireman King Shango, aka Capleton.
In recognition of her growing popularity within the dancehall, Ikaya was no starlight act, instead she performed at 3 am, right after big gun Macka Diamond. Conscious of the fact that several artistes were waiting in the wings, Ikaya did a medley of her tunes and upped the excitement ante when she gave the cameraman a little "something to remember". She appropriately closed her set with the single, Better Whine.
Ikaya, prior to this, had strutted her stuff and rocked the stage at Guinness Summer Eclipse at The Jungle night club in Negril, Jamaica the previous weekend. The only female on the line-up, Ikaya represented well for the ladies and held nothing back as she gave a crowd-pleasing performance to a packed house.
"It was my first Negril Weekend and with everybody from all over Jamaica in that town for the long weekend I knew that I had to impress and give it my best shot," she said during a backstage interview.
When this healthy body girl with a wardrobe that earns her a second look, a dazzling smile, and a lot of sass made her recent Reggae Sumfest debut, she could not be ignored. And Ikaya took control of the Sumfest stage and "dash it pon dem without warning". By the end of her performance, she had the admiration of many, especially those who knew her buss out song Good Up, but didn't know that she was the deejay.
Always eager to please her fans, Ikaya and her management/production team Outtaroad Records, are busy in studio working on new music projects. Another video is also scheduled for release soon.

CLEAN LYRICS AS PAMPUTTAE PERFORMS FOR ST THOMAS KIDS

Following hot on the heels of her highly entertaining Reggae Sumfest performance in which she made good use of a call-up by deejay Spice to perform their collab, Slim vs Fluffy, Pamputtae again scored big over the recent Independence period.
The effervescent, thick girl, who proudly represents for the fluffy females, showed her softer, more maternal side when she hosted and performed at a fun day for kids in Sunny Hill St Thomas on August 6. Pamputtae was the toast of the town as she got close to the kids, who just swarmed all oer the goodas girl.
"I couldn't believe that these children knew me so well," Pamputtae said, still sounding amazed. "This is bush and when I said, 'Wha' me name', they all shouted 'Pamputtae'," she declared.
It was a day of activity geared toward the kids and the deejay delighted in playing host as the children competed in dancing contest -- which was won by a fat girl -- singing contests and a cultural quiz.
"I didn't just 'en-joy' I 'full-joy' myself," the Fluffy diva said. "Since Paul Bogle is from St Thomas and it was Independence I asked them questions on him and the kids are so bright, they got them all right," Pamputtae stated.
During her own performance, she kept it squeaky clean, and even when the kids were demanding that she sing her signature rude song, Goodie Goodie, she rebuked them and instead deliveredJesus Is My Obeah Man, Slim vs Fluffy and I Want A Farmer, much to their delight.
"A long time we in this thing. I am a mother and so I know how important it is to be a role model. I can go to a children's concert or on a school tour and rock it without uttering one slack word and still keep i t entertaining and lively," she declared.
Pamputtae was also fulsome in her praise of the chefs who prepared the curry goat and breadfruit and also the farmers of Sunny Hill, who went all out to ensure that her "car back was full of food" for her journey back to Kingston.

LADY GAGA’S SEMI-NUDE STAGE DIVED

Lady Gaga wants you to know she’s a rock star. The eccentric singer stage dived into the audience during Semi Precious Weapons’ set at Lollapalooza 2010 in Chicago on Friday (Aug. 6). After being reeled in by security, a nearly-nude Gaga jumped right back in, seeming to enjoy the groping from concertgoers.
“If anyone ever calls Lady Gaga a fu**ing pop star, I will kill you,” said Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter. “Semi Precious Weapons and Lady Gaga proved at Lollapalooza 2010 that rock ‘n’ roll is fu**ing back.”

I-OCTANE NO MORE WILL MOVE YOU TO TEARS

Fresh off a crowd conquering performance at Reggae Sumfest 2010, I Octane has wasted no time in heading back to the place he calls home, the studio to record yet another ode of lamentation, NO MORE.

Working once again with Dj Frass from Frass Records with whom he found a winning combination with "My Life", which has gained presence in the Top position of a number of respected charts, this next generation artiste has penned a rather pensive song.

Tired fi a weep and wail and seeing his friends blood splash in the streets, the deeply penetrating lyrics which addresses betrayal, death and plodding forward beyond the negativity which pervades the society; I Octane has mastered the art of roping his vocals around one's mind. His vocals filled with sincere pain will compel you to do some amount of introspection.

Laid on a haunting beat with backing vocals that ride the instruments like a professional surfer on a big wave NO MORE will move you to tears. Even if a music video is not done for this song, you will be able to visualize the agony and sufferation that is brought about by I Octane's expressed burden because it is a topic to which we can all relate.

Westside Konnection Records set to drop Summer Breeze and Silk rhythms

The summer is hot and as usual the events calendar is overloaded. In the mean time people are partying none stop all over Jamaica, as the party season moves into high gear. As expected there is also a proliferation of new songs coming out almost daily from both established and up and coming producers. Negril based production house Westside Konnection Records is very keen on getting in on the summer action.
The record label that recently opened its recording studio which is located on the West End (One Love Drive) of the tourist resort town, is about to drop two sizzling hot one drop rhythms for the summer. The rhythms are called the Summer Breeze and the Silk and feature songs from several artists that are affiliated with the label such as Junior X, Ruffi-Ann, Timmi Burrell, Nique, Rexxx, West Bank, Trendy, Tmar, Salanyde and Shedroc.
When contacted this is what a spokesperson from Westside Konnection Records had to say about the soon to be released rhythm projects: “We are very confident that both rhythms will do well because all of the artists we recorded on the Summer Breeze and the Silk rhythms, did some very good songs on them. We will be putting a lot of promotion behind these songs as it is our intention to make our mark on the local market and then go international and producing good music is the only way we can do that.”
He also stated that Westside Konnection Records is fully dedicated to the development of new talents and deliberately chose not to record a lot of established acts on the rhythms. All songs on both rhythms will be available through all leading internet stores including Itunes, Amazon.com and Emusic before the end of August.
