CE’CILE MINES ‘GOLD’ IN THE UK
BY KEVIN JACKSON
• CE’CILE... I don’t think Jamaica knows of half the stuff I’ve done over the years
ALTHOUGH Ce'Cile has been consistent in churning out hits locally (her most recent include Anything and Black Coffee), she has managed to score most of her mainstream successes outside of Jamaica.
Last year, she topped the German R&B Singles chart with Hot Like We and a few weeks ago Talk Talk mouthed its way to number 10.
Now Ce'Cile is hoping to strike it big in the UK as her collaboration Gold Dust with DJ Fresh has debuted in the number 24 spot on the UK pop singles chart. The success of the song has made the singer/deejay/producer an in-demand commodity.
"When I learnt that the song entered the charts, I noticed that a lot of producers began to contact me from the UK. So I figure that it must be as a result of the song's success. Even the artiste who was originally supposed to have recorded the song, she even made contact with me," an excited Ce'Cile said in an interview earlier this week.
Gold Dust is the first single off drum and bass and acid music producer DJ Fresh's sophomore album Kryptonite. British recording artiste Ms Dynamite was originally considered for the guest spot on Gold Dust.
Asked how the collaboration with DJ Fresh came about, Ce'cile explained "DJ Fresh contacted me via the Internet and he said he would love to do a song with me and that the song was already written."
Recorded in 2009, Ce'Cile said she never expected the song to become the hit that it has. "I had no high expectations neither did I expect it not to take off. I have always worked with huge producers in the UK, for example, Stanton Warriors. I did a song like six years ago called Slanty. I was also hired to do a collaboration with Estelle. I don't think Jamaica knows of half the stuff I've done over the years."
Ce'Cile said she has always tried to step outside of the box and do things differently as an artiste. "While everyone was going after America, I've always done the opposite of what everyone did. The people in Germany loved me the first time that I did German Splash and I ran with the love and capitalised on it. I was always working with producers in the UK because I had a publishing deal with Greensleeves as a producer, which I don't think that many Jamaicans realise that I am also a producer," Ce'Cile pointed out.
Added Ce'Cile, "I am always excited to work and overly excited by different genres of music. From the beginning of my career I have always told people that I am not a dancehall or reggae or a Jamaican artiste. I am an artiste and I do anything and I can rock anything."
