Bounty Killer and crew rushes stage at Bung Bang Connect

Shouts of 'Nineties' and 'Gaza' peppered the air as a faceoff between rival factions of the Portmore Empire and the Alliance took centrestage at the Club Amaura in Queens, New York. Bounty Killer and an entourage of men walked up to the backstage area of the club during an energetic performance by Blak Ryno and Jahvinci, cutting short their set before Ryno could deliver the song dissing the Killer. The situation got unbelievably tense and the strong contingent of Gaza followers got up in the face of other men aligned to Bounty Killer before security was able to whisk away both Ryno and Jahvinci before things got out of hand. Hip hop star Ron Browz reportedly left the building without getting a chance to perform. Bounty Killer closed the show. Ryno got huge forwards for Thug Anthem, Dare to Try and Real Stingers, while Jahvinci rocked Amazura with his recent number one hit, Watch Yu Friends, that had the small crowd singing in unison.

MR. VEGAS #1 ON FIVE CHARTS

Mr. Vegas runaway hit, I Am Blessed, is carving out a bit of chart history in the modern day era of Jamaican reggae-dancehall music. The single, which was released over two months ago, now occupies the number one position simultaneously on at least five major music charts, underlining the dominance of the song here in Jamaica.

The single is #1 on the Jamaica Music Countdown charts, hosted by Richie B of HOT 102, while simultaneously rocking the top spot on the weekly ER charts, the RE TV dancehall charts, HYPE TV charts and the Digicel Caribbean top 30 charts. Two weeks ago, the song also topped the BBC 1xtra dancehall
charts. In the meantime, the video, which features a reverse narrative concept employed by acclaimed video director Jay Will, has also hit the #1 spot on the CVM Hitlist chart, the HYPE VTX Countdown as well as a video chart on Synergy TV in Trinidad.

"It is a rare feat to be at the top of so many charts at the same times and it shows Mr. Vegas' universal appeal and the strength of his fan base in Jamaica. I Am Blessed is easily one of the biggest songs
of his career and the song is just beginning to catch fire on urban stations in the United States and in England, so it augurs well for Mr. Vegas," manager Ray Alexander said.

The I Am Blessed video is also hovering at the #2 spot on the RE MVP charts.

Mr. Vegas is booked solid for the rest of the summer with shows lined up for every weekend until the end of August. He will begin his European tour on July 13, and he is presently compiling singles to
produce an album this summer.

Vegas has an uncanny knack of making hits. After jumping into the spotlight with Nike Air, his next single, "Heads High", had a successful chart run in the UK and a #69 peak on the Billboard R & B
chart. In 1998, his debut album, Heads High, was released, which hit #5 on the US Reggae chart. Vegas won a MOBO for Best Reggae Artist for the Heads High album as well while the year 2000 saw the single "Hot Gal Today" featuring Sean Paul becoming a minor hit on the US R&B charts, peaking at #66.In 2001, he issued Damn Right, featuring guest appearances from Shaggy and Big Yard; this album went to #2 on the US Reggae chart. 2004 saw the release of the Pull Up LP, and the title track scraped the bottom of the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #98 (as well as #68 on the R&B chart). In 2006 he did a Soca collaboration with Machel Montano from Trinidad and Tobago Dance With You on
Machel's B.O.D.Y. album. His 2007 album, Hot It Up, featured songs such as the Jamaican hits "Hot Wuk", "Taxi Fare" and "Tek Weh Yuhself".

DáVille confirmed for International Night 2 of Reggae Sumfest 2009

Fashozy international recording artiste, DáVille, is confirmed to perform on this year’s International Night 2 at Reggae Sumfest on Saturday, July 25 at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay venue.
It will be the second time that the singer will be performing at the gigantic summer entertainment event. He performed on the event in 2007 where he gave a superb performance, which resulted in him being booked for several local and overseas shows.
The singer, whose ‘Missing You Right Now’ went to #1 on most local and overseas charts, is still one of the most heavily requested and played songs on the airwaves and in the dancehalls locally and internationally.
Another single, ‘Never Gonna Cry’, is also popping up on media charts, playlists, Internet radio stations and blog sites around the world and is fast heading for the top. It has just entered Richie B’s Top 20 charts. The song is touted to be the next big hit song for the singer. A video for the song in also being edited and will be released soon.
DáVille is putting the final touches to a brand new album expected to be out soon. Studio engineers and persons who were privy to hear some of the tracks all say that the album is definitely going to be a “must have”.
In April, DáVille gave an entertaining still talked about performance at New York’s top radio personality Squeeze’s Rock With Squeeze Mondays Party at the SOB.
He then flew to Dominica where he dazzled Dominicans at the Krazy Kokonuts Club with a devastating performance. DáVille can next be seen in performance on tonight, June 3 at a show dubbed ‘DáVille Unplugged’ at Club Denim in New York.
Since the A.R.P. singer went solo, his career continues to soar to higher heights. He has recorded a number of chart topping hit songs such as ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Can’t Get Over You’, ‘This Time I Promise’, ‘Storm’ ‘Missing You’ and ‘In Heaven’.

Asylum's Closure End Of An Era

The recent closure the Asylum night club in New Kingston certainly marks the end of a new era. Similar to when its sister club, Cactus, in Portmore slammed its doors shut. Of course, the suggestion that Asylum has gone beyond its "lifetime" as stated by owner Brian "Ribbi" Chung, is an important factor, but so too the opening of Quad night club, along with the proliferation of street dances in the last couple of years.

These dances- some of them in gated venues, for example Weddy Weddy -started out being totally free and those that do charge, the cover is nominal and in most cases women don't pay. And, the dances are plentiful and flourishing. On any given night, one can easily find one, and in some cases up to three open-air dances which enjoy good patronage, clearly an indication of the vibe the people.

But then, this too is a cycle, as it has happened before when the jamming places were venues such as House of Leo, rather than the clubs. Stone Love, resident House of Leo sound, later moved into the club (read Asylum) where they played at the weekly Dancehall night session.

Quite interesting, is the addition of a new night club to the busy New Kingston strip with the opening of the Pure/Plush night club just last week. It is said that anything that owner Kimani Robinson puts his hand to turns to pure gold, so any debate of its success ought to be purely academic.

ETANA BAPTISED AT THE EMMANUEL APOSTOLIC CHURCH!

Rastafarian reggae singer Etana made an important step towards bridging the idealogical divide between Rastafarianism and orthodox Christianity yesterday when she was baptized at the Emmanuel Apostolic church on Slipe Road in Kingston.

Etana, speaking in an exclusive interview with one876 this morning, said that the move was spontaneous and that most people in the congregation were shocked when she stepped forward to be baptized.

“No one knew…everyone was thrown off; they were shocked. When they saw a Rastafarian walking up the aisle then to see me embrace them as a Rastafarian, that was unseen,” she said.

She described the actual baptism as an ongoing conversation between herself and God.

“Minister Blackman said ‘yu know yu can’t turn back?’ and I said ‘turn back from what?’ Because when you think about it,the way I live my life is not unclean, the way I speak, what I express through my music. I don’t wear pants. If I embrace Christianity as I would my mother, or my brother or any member of my family, it makes a statement. If I say ‘love’ just as a Rastafarian, then you expect it, but if I embrace Christianity and preach love, it makes a bigger statement about how things ought to be.”

Etana said that she is hoping that this move will help to unite

“We speak of unconditional love and unity yet we are so separated and divided. I want to do my part to help get rid of the prejudice and division, and convey the message that no matter your class, race, creed or colour, it should be about one love and we should leave the judgment to God,” she intoned passionately.

“Why are we confusing the youths? If there is only one God, why the division? What kind of doctrines are we supporting?”

Etana said that the content of her music will not change because of her new-found faith.

“Don’t expect me to sing only religious Pentecostal songs, I shall remain the voice of the people. I will continue to sing about real life situation and the experiences of our life together as a people.”
