TORONTO ENJOYS FLIPPA MAFIA’S FLOSSING

When Flossing King, Flippa Mafia, took to the stage at the Platinum Banquet Hall in Toronto, Canada two weekends ago, he delivered a still-talked-about performance and left fans wanting more … and more. And, what’s more significant, Flippa was the only act on the bill.

Flippa, who rose to prominence in the dancehall late last year, is undoubtedly enjoying an exceptional run, and one which he is definitely capitalizing on.

The King of Floss as he is known, scored number one last year with the hit single Dem Yah and Dem Yah, and when he performed this song for fans during his 20-minute stint on stage, it was clear that the deejay had cemented his place in dancehall history.

Among the other songs from his ever-growing repertoire which he performed were When You Floss, The Girls Done Like me and, naturally, the highly controversial Unfinished House, which is one of the most played songs in the dancehall just now..

“Is one of the biggest songs in the dancehall now, and the video is also getting rave reviews,” Flippa said in an after-show interview.

It was this single which brought the undisputed King of Flossing in contention with deejay Bounty Killer, whose mansion on the hills is ‘unfinished’. But Flippa insists that there was nothing personal in the lyrics, he was just expressing himself the best way he knows how.

MR. VEGAS THRILLS QUEENS AND BROOKLYN WITH BACK TO BACK SHOWS

With two performances in the United States recently, Mr. Vegas showed his appeal in two key and vastly different age and income groups, one is the coveted demographic of Hispanic under 17 teenyboppers and the other is that of the loyal over 30 Jamaican reggae-dancehall lovers. The performances came back-to-back in New York and showed the incredible currency and continued appeal of Mr. Vegas after 10 years in the business.

Performing on Tuesday night, June 30 at the East Manor club in Queens, Vegas gave a dizzying performance in front of a screaming crowd of 1,500 Hispanic teenagers, many of them not more than 16 years old. With songs such as the Billboard chart-burner Heads High, Pull Up, Hot Wuk and Hot Gal No Fight Over Man he had the teenagers in a literal frenzy throughout most of the performance, each song provoking a crescendo of screams. Security guards had to prevent some over-enthusiastic girls from jumping onstage to do a booty dance-off during the Hot Wuk segment.

Some even tried to shed their clothing and had to be restrained from doing so and escorted out of the club by security personnel. Mr. Vegas has always had an incredible appeal with the Hispanic psychographic, and has appeared on several Reggaeton mixtapes, especially after his Pull Up song inspired Pitbull to score a major US chart hit with Culo which has a similar melody.

On the following night, July 1 at the Fish Eye Bar in Brooklyn, Mr. Vegas showed the complete range of his skills as he delivered a mature set that ran the gamut of music from R & B classics to reggae favourites to his modern era dancehall hits.

He started off his set with When You Love Someone, a Michael Bolton ballad, before delivering great renditions of Baby I’m Missing You, and Babyface’s Everytime I Close My Eyes.

“You have some people who listen to the real music, who love the real music , tonight we’re going to find how much you know about real music, some man doan know how romance a girl with the real music, dem only want come inna the Ramping Shop,” he joked to raucous laughter from the females in the audience. He then sang What Am I Living For? and then did a tribute to Michael
Jackson with Hold Me before segueing into raunchy lyrics, ‘Bun It All Day, Bun It All Day’, and a little ode to the weed.

Then veteran singer Sammi Dread came onstage and told Vegas that Demus was in the house, He invited him on and he immediately bussed the place with his trademark gruff voice. Mr. Vegas specifically requested the dancehall classic Ruff Neck Chicken and Demus earned a big forward with some sexual advice regarding the lubricating properties of Vaseline. The girls hollered their approval.

After Demus exited the stage, Vegas continued with his set, and bigged up stalwarts of the music like Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Pinchers, Shabba, Josey Wales who paved the way. “Yu have some people who disresepect the elders, that’s why dem mash up after two months inna the business,” he said.
He touched a piece of Barrington Levy’s timeless classic, Prison Oval Rock and the crowd roared, and then they sang along as he led them through another Levy favourite, Too Experienced.
Then the tempo picked up immediately with the Dutchie Pot riddim, and he belted out Tek Weh Yuself, with a medley of songs such as Heads High, the classic Murder She Wrote,This weekend, Mr. Vegas will be returning to the familiar stomping grounds of Orlando tonight July 4th for a show. The last time he was in Orlando, he was one of the top performers at DJ ProStyles birthday party, two months ago.

SULTRY LADY SAW KICKS OFF FIRST DIGICEL ODI

International dancehall superstar, Marion Hall, better known a Lady Saw was a special guest at the coin toss for the first Digicel One Day International at Sabina Park. Though cutting a pretty picture as always, Lady Saw did not seem to bring any luck to home captain, Chris Gayle. He lost the toss to Mahendra Singh Dhoni who chose to have the West Indies field first.
Nevertheless the two Jamaicans were delighted to see each other, they hugged and chatted at length with Lady Saw, also meeting Dhoni – along with legendary commentator Tony Cozier who presented the toss on television.
Lady Saw – no stranger to cricket having performed in the mound at Sabina Park for appreciative fans – presented the coin for toss to Gayle but Dhoni manage to call correctly. A prolific performer on stage, simply having to hand over the coin would have been among her snappier roles on camera. She, however, seemed to thoroughly enjoy being in the company of the two captains who took time out to take photographs with the dancehall icon.
Now considered Jamaica’s top lady singer/ DJ Lady Saw was recently revealed as one of the faces of the Digicel-themed “Divas of Dancehall”, which honored the female artistes who have graced the internationally renowned Reggae Sumfest stage.
Lady Saw has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the Rosie O’Donell Show. Popularly acknowledged as the Queen of the Dancehall, Saw has collaborated with Beenie Man, DJ Clue, pop artistes Gwen Stefani and Vitamin C among dozens of others.

Queen Ifrica ignites techno explosion

In novel and creative move, which shows the versatility of reggae music, songstress Queen Ifrica has released techno remix of her single Far Away. The track is explosive in nature and is reaching new markets with an infusion of the dynamic and intense electronic beats of techno, with the classic ‘one drop’ reggae melody.
Originally released in January, Far Away’s laid back vibe of roots rock reggae was remixed by is creator Rickman Warren of Jamplifed Records. “We had a vision for the song” explained Queen Ifrica. “We just got the inspiration to make the tune on a different plane, to a different market, with a different vibe,” she says excitedly.
According to the producer Rickman Warren, the seemly unlikely marriage of the contrasting music styles is aimed at increasing the listenership of our Jamaican Reggae artistes and fans, as well as promoting Jamaica reggae music in yet another way. “Our intention is always to be a force in the world wide spread of reggae music,” adds Queen Ifrica. “Reggae music is loved the world over, and we’re just continuing to spread the love.”
The “Far Away” Techno Remix will be available for down load soon, from iTunes and other major retailers. Its release coincides with the recent débute of Queen Ifrica’s latest album Montego Bay, which features the, song in its original form.
