THE QUEEN IS #1 HEADING INTO REGGAE SUMFEST

All will get the chance to hail the ‘Queen’ this weekend when the Fyah Muma, Queen Ifrica takes the stage at this year’s Reggae Sumfest show, the main events set to take place at Catherine Hall in Montego Bay from July 23rd to 25th.

Still dazzling in the success of her current chart topping single, Far Away, which recently took over the #1 position on the Hype TV Charts, Queen Ifrica is set to give a steller performance this Friday, July 24th - International Night 1, where she will share the stage with top international acts like Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson and Jazmine Sullivan.

Much will be expected from the Lioness on the Rise singer, who recently released her debut album, titled ‘Montego Bay’, as she performs before thousands in Montego Bay, which is also the place of her birth.

And speaking of Lioness on the Rise, that single is currently in the #18 position on the Hype TV Charts. Overseas visitors attending this year’s Reggae Sumfest show will also be in for a special treat, as a number of Queen Ifrica songs are widely loved abroad. Well the charts says it all, as Lioness on the Rise is currently in the #5 spot on the New York Top 30 Reggae Charts, while Far Away holds down the # 15 position. And on the South Florida Top 25 Reggae Singles chart, Lioness on the Rise is also in the #5 position and Far Away holding on at #16.
Another single that has also been ripping up the local airwaves, is one called Mek Mi Grow. This brand new single from Queen Ifrica, has already been gaining much popularity, and is now creating quite a buzz in the streets.

Bob Marley More Popular in Non-White World Than Michael Jackson

Reggae icon Bob Marley was more popular than Michael Jackson in most of the non-white world based on web searches up to the time of Jackson′s death.
Blacks, Latin-Americans and many Asians were searching for Marley over pop icon Jackson with China and India as notable exceptions, due to limited reggae exposure.
Splash utilised Google Trends which compared as a ratio the search activity for each artiste over time. Both artistes are said to be ′kings′ in their respective fields, and trend data tells just how important each was in specific territories.
Jackson beat Marley in all major white countries except Portugal and Italy, with the US in a statistical tie at a ratio of 1.02 to 1.0 in favour of Jackson. It meant that for every 102 persons searching for Jackson in the US there were 100 searching for Marley. But Marley was more popular than Jackson in the states of Utah, South Carolina, California, and Florida.
But in the non-white world Marley was the king (at least up to Jackson′s death, which spiked media and fan interest).
. Latin-American countries which posted higher search ratios for Marley over Jackson in 2008 were Brazil - the largest black population outside of Africa - at 3 to 1; Mexico at 10 to 7; Chile at 10 to 7; Guatemala at 100 to 4; Costa Rica at 10 to 4; Columbia at 10 to 7; Argentina at 10 to 4; and Jamaica 3 to 1. Venezuela and Peru also had higher searches for Marley than Jackson in 2007, but Jackson beat Marley in 2008.
. Asian countries that posted higher search ratios for Marley than Jackson in 2008 were Indonesia at 10 to 7; Philippines at 10 to 9; Thailand at 10 to 5; and Japan at 10 to 9. The Chinese don′t seem to know of Marley, he doesn′t register as a comparative search. India has four times as many searches for Jackson than Marley.
. Most African countries do not register comparative searches of Jackson or Marley. The only countries which registered were Morocco with a 14 to 10 ratio in Marley′s favour. South Africans had mixed results similar to the demography of the country. For every 10 Marley searches, 16 searched for Jackson. However in the Eastern Cape, a mainly black province in which former South African president Nelson Mandela was born, Marley was more searched than Jackson. In Egypt twice as many people searched for Jackson than Marley.
Marley died in 1981 and his most successful album Legend has sold over 20 million copies. Jackson′s most successful album Thriller sold over 50 million copies.
Up to last week July 9th 2009 Jackson tops iTunes pop charts in 21 of 22 countries. At the same time, Marley tops the reggae album charts on iTunes in 18 of the 22 listed countries worldwide.

MR. VEGAS ROCKS 36.000 @ DOUR FESTIVAL IN EUROPE

Mr. Vegas closed the Dour Festival show in Belgium with a high-energy, rain-soaked performance that captivated the large crowd which had flocked to the site for the final day of the annual four-day music
festival.

Barefoot and soaked as the skies opened and a deluge descended on the festival site, Mr. Vegas had the festival-goers jumping, raving and cheering for well over an hour. Once he took off his shoes and socks,
and waded into the crowd to show the fans how to do the Raging Bull, he had the audience mesmerized by his onstage antics.

With the competent backing of his band, Mr. Vegas wowed the audience with a slew of hits such as Hot Wuk, Tek Weh Yuself and Nike Air. And he got one of the biggest forwards of the night with his 1998
Billboard chart hit, Heads High. The crowd also roared its approval or the gospel-tinged I Am Blessed before Mr. Vegas exited to cheers and screams from the well satisfied audience.

The festival featured megawattage reggae names such as Israel Vibration, Anthony B, and Buju Banton, but over 34,000 stood and waited for Mr. Vegas to bring a fitting climax to a festival that had
thrilled and captivated huge crowds for over four days. It is clear that Mr. Vegas’ fan base is bigger than what most reggae writers, journalists and industry insiders give him credit for. And his ability
to rock a show in pouring rain merely underlines his strength as a performer on the European continent.

The Dour Festival was held at a new festival site in Belgium this year, where over 200 bands rocked six stages over a four-day span. Once again Dour Festival was able to score muscular box office numbers: 34.000 tickets sold on Thursday, 35.000 on Friday and 36.000 on Saturday and Sunday. That’s over 140.000 tickets sold over 4 days in Belgium and abroad. There were also 850 journalists present this
year to sample a lineup which had a decidedly international flavor. Out of the 200 bands playing at Dour this year, there were 51 Belgian bands, 41 American bands, 30 French artists, 29 hailed from the UK,
there was one Russian combo, two Japanese, two Swedish, two Brazilians and one Australian band.

Mr. Vegas would also like to express his heartfelt thanks to fellow dancehall performer, Buju Banton who was gracious enough to lend his band a keyboard after Vegas’ band members lost their luggage on a Delta flight from Kingston to Italy. On reaching Belgium, Vegas sought the help of Lenky, Buju Banton’s key board player, and they extended the hand of friendship. Buju Banton even insisted on staying onstage to ensure a smooth transition and to ensure that his band’s keyboards were used to back Mr. Vegas. Buju’s exact words were: "I can have 7 keyboard and you want one and I leave?Wi nah leave, gwaan guh mash it up" in his distinctive deep gravelly tone.Buju’s engineer Solji and monitor engineer also helped as well to ensure that the rain did not affect Vegas’ performance.

“This is one of my best moments of unity in music. God bless the
Gargamel Buju Banton,” Vegas said.

ELE PUTS THE ‘DANCE’ IN DANCEHALL

Flamboyant deejay Elephant Man, with his “colour colour” hair, fashionable designer styles, sometimes completed with a shoulder bag, is the responsible mastermind behind reuniting dancehall music with fun.
Elephant, with his signature style, has been promoting innocent, trouble-free dancing, a vital element that’s been absent from the culture and most often replaced by a new wave of artistry who glorify a bad man, bad mind persona in their records.
Among his top dancehall anthems are Signal The Plane, Pon Di River Pon Di Bank, Log On, Higher Level, Get Jiggy, Gully Creeper and Nuh Linga.
And as the lisped-tongued Ele says, “Everybody know say a me put the dance back in dancehall.”
Now it’s Reggae Sumfest time and the dancing king is in top form and ready to take it to them from all angles.
With his single perched comfortably at the top of Riche B’s Music Countdown Chart and Hallelujah at #8 on the Hype TV Top 20 Singles Chart, Ele is surely kicking up quite a bit of dust.
As the spokesperson for Digicel’s energetic Flip It to ATI campaign, Elephant Man is a staple on the very creatively designed invitations and flyers.
Of the partnership with Elephant Man, Digicel’s senior sponsorship manager Shelly-Ann Curran stated, “It was the perfect synergy. We needed someone who could aptly portray what this campaign and Elephant Man was perfect.”
Ele is quite happy to flip it and the energy god says he will be doing quite a bit of ‘flipping’ both at ATI and Reggae Sumfest.

Jackson Brothers for Reggae Sumfest

The surviving members of the Jackson Five and brothers of the late King of Pop are set to be in Jamaica next week for the salute to Michael Jackson by Reggae Sumfest, the world`s greatest reggae festival.

Three of the original members of the Jackson Five are confirmed to arrive in Jamaica for the festival next Friday, officials of Summerfest Productions revealed yesterday. Toriano Adaryll `Tito` Jackson, Randy and Jackie Jackson have been confirmed but Marlon, the other original member of the band, may also join their brothers in Jamaica for the 17th annual presentation of Reggae Sumfest, which is this year dedicated to the memory of the fifth member of the Jackson Five, the late, great, Michael Joseph Jackson.

Tito Jackson is set to also perform on the final night of the show, Saturday, July 25th.
Officials also revealed that Katherine Jackson and Michael Jackson`s three children will be guests of the Jamaica government at a later date. They will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement award for Michael Jackson by Summerfest productions.

The Jackson`s are also scheduled to award the government and the people of Jamaica a plaque to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love that has been shown to Michael Jackson in Jamaica.

Jackson had actually visited and performed in Jamaica in 1975 as a member of the Jackson 5. The group was hosted then by former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, at his home in Temple Meads, St Andrew. At the time, Seaga was opposition leader and head of the now ruling Jamaica Labor Party. The Jackson 5 was the opening act for Bob Marley and the Wailers at the outdoor National Stadium.

The “Fyah Mumma”Queen Ifrica with Far Away who has just launch her first album “Montego Bay”, has worked her way to the #1 position on the chart by dethroning the “Gaza President”. The Fyah Mumma is heading into Reggae Sumfest with the number one single on the Hype TV chart.
The “Gully God” Mavado is definitely having the best week ever as two of his hot tracks has gain energy on the chart. High Unda is claiming the Shot To Watch to skip into the #2 spot from #3 and Never Believe Me took the Greatest Gainer title to jump up four places to take hold of the #11 position from #17.
The “Gaza president” Vybz Kartel’s Dollar Sign crashes into the #3 spot after being in the number one position for three weeks with the contagious hit.
Singing sensation Alaine continues to hold down the #4 spot now two weeks in a row with Never Done.
Mr. Vegas keeps the infectious hit I Am Blessed at the #5 spot for another week.
The chart’s New Entry goes to Unicorn & Macka Diamond with Think Bout Mi to makes its debut at the #20 position, the track is on the Notice label.
