BISHOP HERRO BLAIR MET WITH DUDUS

BY NADINE WILSON

CONTRARY to a widespread claim that alleged drug lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke wanted to make a deal with United States (US) authorities, Political Ombudsman Bishop Herro Blair yesterday disclosed that the alleged don was more interested in taking his chances with a local court instead.
Blair, who also chairs the Peace Management Initiative, told his congregation at the Faith Cathedral Deliverance Centre in Kingston yesterday that he had met with the reputed gang leader twice, prior to last Tuesday's visit to Tivoli Gardens with Public Defender Earl Witter.
The first visit was the Wednesday before, during which time he spent two hours speaking to Coke, whom the US Government had indicted on arms and drug-trafficking charges last August.
"If I go back to Wednesday, two weeks ago, I received a call and I went to Jamaica House. I was requested by the government to go into Tivoli Gardens to see if I could negotiate the surrender of Mr Coke," he said, adding that he later met with the Opposition People's National Party to get their approval, as well.
The ombudsman said that following the approval from both parties, he waited until he was given permission by 'a contact' to go in to see Coke.
"I spent two hours with him. I came out, thank God, safely; I can't tell you what I saw, but just imagine what I saw," he said.
"At that time the place was already fortified and the officers were preparing to go in I begged of them, please if you go in remember there are innocent lives that must be saved," Bishop Blair said.
It was the following day that a group of Coke loyalists, mostly women dressed in white, took to the streets to voice their support for the man who many said was 'next to God'. During the melee, they took to blocking roads in sections of Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town, setting up huge barricades as the security forces seemed to watch helplessly from the sidelines.
But, according to Blair, he had still been in dialogue with Coke, up to that point.
"The negotiations went on until Saturday. I got a call from the security forces who gave me the permission to go back to Mr Coke, with an offer from the United States Government that he turn in himself in," he said.
"He (Coke) feels, or he felt at that time, that his best bet was to wait on the rulings of the court because he felt that the Jamaican courts would treat him better than the American courts, and that's where it ended up until Saturday evening when the security forces decided to go into Tivoli Gardens," the pastor told his congregation which sat quietly listening to his account.
But instead of turning himself in, Coke evaded the security forces which by Monday were engaged in a shootout with a group of Coke's supporters, some of whom it has since been revealed were paid up to $100,000 per day to defend his turf. Military personnel have since revealed that they suspected Coke had fled Tivoli Gardens as early as 4:00 pm, while the operations in the area were going on.
Police said that 73 civilians and three members of the security forces died during last week's civil unrest, which quickly spread to other sections of West Kingston and halted commercial activities in some sections of the Corporate Area.
On Saturday, Public Defender Earl Witter issued a public appeal for Coke to turn himself over to the authorities in the interest of the people. Witter said that he and Blair stood ready to facilitate the process.

MORE GUNS UNEARTHED IN TIVOLI

As the search continues for illegal weapons in West Kingston, eight more guns have been found bringing the total number of guns recovered to date to 36. Of the total, five were found on Saturday (May 29) and three pistols (handguns) were located today.
The police reports that 356 assorted rounds of ammunition have also been unearthed, bringing the total number to 9,241.
Up to Friday evening (May 29), 28 guns and 8,885 rounds of assorted ammunition were recovered from the area of operation.
The ammunition comprises .357; 9mm; .45; 7.62 long, which are used in SLRs; 7.62 short, used in AK47s; and 5.56 used in M16s.
This is in addition to hand grenades, dynamite, ballistic helmets, and protective vests.
Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, said that the search process, which is ongoing, has so far proven to be "very successful."
"Now that we are able to conduct more indulgent searches in there, we have been coming up with weapons and ammunitions," he stated.

How the security forces conquered Dudus' fortress

A former member of the security forces trained as an explosive expert is the suspected mastermind behind the elaborate defence system established around Tivoli Gardens last week.
He was supported by other persons who had been kicked out of the police force or the Jamaica Defence Force for varying reasons.
The explosives expert could be slapped with several charges after soldiers, who entered Tivoli Gardens on Monday, faced elaborate booby traps and explosive devices never before seen in Jamaica
In the week leading up to the retake of Tivoli Gardens by the security forces, the thugs - it is believed, under the guidance of the former member of the security forces - managed to build and test explosive devices from scratch, using available local material.
According to Sunday Gleaner sources, the devices were similar to those which have been seen on the ground in Afghanistan.
They included bits of steel used as part of a lethal bombing system, LPG cylinders laced with explosives carefully set up as booby traps, Molotov cocktails used as firebombs, and sharpened scrap metals set to mangle the unsuspecting.
Many of these were wired electrically so that they could be triggered with the slightest touch.
Hundreds of gallons of petrol had also been purchased to fuel the resistance.

army of thugs

In addition to the security system, Tivoli Gardens was defended by a small army of thugs. More than 400 of them were reportedly enlisted to the cause.
Travelling from as far away as Montego Bay, St James, Clarendon, St Catherine and St Thomas, they headed to west Kingston.
They were joined by others from neighbouring enclaves who came out to support the man who had risen to the most prominent position in Jamaica's seedy underworld - Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
He had pulled together an army of hardened criminals, some of whom he had to pay thousands of dollars, to take on the armed forces.
The mission was to prevent the execution of an arrest warrant that would begin the process of his extradition to the United States to face drugs and gun charges. Ultimately, Coke wanted to pull
more inner-city communities under the rule of his 'Presidential Click' empire and strengthen his reach across Jamaica.
Among the recruits that were brought to west Kingston were known murderers, petty thieves, gangsters, and persons skilled in military tactics.
The recruits also included persons with computer skills who could download critical information on explosive gadgets and guerilla warfare, as well as individuals with electrical engineering skills who could rig up and operate major explosive apparatus.
Many of the foot soldiers had spent time in prison and were fearless in the face of the law.
As Monday, May 24, drew closer, and it became clearer that an invasion was at hand, the barricades to the community became more extensive.
Old cars, scrap metal, crates, sandbags, barrels and discarded household items were brought in to thicken the blockades, despite appeals from the police for them to be removed.
Sandbags camouflaged concrete slabs with peepholes and the high-rise buildings were prepared as lookout points and fixed with truck tyres to be lit to create smoke screens against helicopter assaults.
Coke, it was believed, had embedded himself in the community, surrounded by his thugs, confident of his safety.
On the outskirts of the community, the Tivoli forces ordered first strike on 14 police stations, two of which were burnt to the ground.
The cops were kept at bay, physically and psychologically, as the thugs seemingly declared 'the Republic of Tivoli' theirs.
For four decades, Tivoli had grown as an adjunct to Jamaica, existing under a different rule of law, defying efforts to bring it in line with the rest of the society.
In the past, efforts to bring Tivoli under control did not get past the periphery.
The move against the lawmen and their facilities was a new dimension in the struggle between Jamaica and the Corporate Area's western belt.
Tempers boiled and steamed as the soldiers moved in.
Faced with insurmountable fire power and a well-thought-out strategy from the security forces, Coke and his inner circle abandoned the men he had recruited, and the women and children who had demonstrated for him. They were to face the onslaught without the leader.
When Tivoli fell, Coke and his inner circle were on the run, over 700 hundred men were detained, 400 of whom had no addresses in Tivoli Gardens.
More than 50 of these men were wanted by the police for various crimes, and a large number of them were listed as persons of interest and under police watch.
So far, some 8,800 rounds of ammunition and 28 guns have been seized by the security forces and 73 civilians confirmed dead.
Among the dead were at least two women, and a few of the bodies were men wearing dresses.

ALICIA KEYS AND SWIZZ BEATZ ARE ENGAGED, EXPECTING A BABY

The rumors can finally be put to rest. Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz are officially planning a wedding and expecting a baby.
The singer and producer “are expecting a baby and are engaged to be married in a private ceremony later this year,” reps for the couple confirm to PEOPLE.

The high-profile couple has kept their relationship quiet, but friends say, “They’re very happy.” They were all smiles at Thursday night’s Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in London.
Whispers about Alicia’s pregnancy began to spread after she showed signs of a baby bump during appearances in the U.K. this week.

12 WANTED MEN SURRENDER SAME DAY

• Hours after being named by police

TWELVE men who were this morning named by police as most wanted, turned themselves over to the cops hours later.
Among those who are now in police custody is Michealous Phipps, also known as 'Zeekie' the son of incarcerated Matthews Lane don, Donald 'Zeeks' Phipps.
Rohan Hope — the brother of slain One Order don, Andrew 'Bun Man' Hope — was handed over to Assistant Commissioner of Police Leon Rose by attorney Peter Champagnie. The attorney also turned in Mark 'Mark II' Walters.
"I had discussion with ACP Rose and handed over the two gentlemen. They went in because they heard their names were on the list and they wanted to assist the police in their investigations," Champagnie told the Observer.
Police say Hope has taken over the leadership of the Spanish Town-based One Order gang since the death of his brother in February 2006. Walters is said to be a member of a gang based in Allman Town in Central Kingston.
Cleveland 'Cassie' Downer — the leader of a gang based in a community known as 'Common' which runs off Red Hills Road — has also given himself up.
Other members of the Common gang who are now in police custody are Richard Francis o/c Red Head, Jermaine Smith and Audley Strachan.
Kareem Allen, the son of slain South Side don, Franklyn 'Chubby Dread' Allen has also turned himself in.

DESTINY'S PASSION IS MUSIC

Destiny aka Kimberly Cuvilie was born and raised in the city of Montego Bay, St James. A graduate of the Montego Bay High School and later the community college where she did a pre-university business course, she says her passion is music and the creative processes of composing, mixing and arranging songs. This led her to pursue a course in audio and studio engineering.
While growing up, she was always surrounded by music as her aunt Patricia Edwards was a member of the dynamic trio, Ebony. As Destiny recalls, at a tender age of six she would dress in her aunt’s costumes and do her rendition of Diana Ross’ Stop in the name of Love. Musician, singer and producer Ed Robinson was a friend of the family whenever she visited him she would lurk around his studio and listen to the work he produced.
Destiny’s younger siblings Nickel, Nicolo and Shante are also singers and her brother Nicolo is the lead singer for the group Khalil, second place winners in the 2008 Digicel Rising stars competition. Destiny entered the 2009 Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition and like her brother was placed second.
She has been composing her own lyrics since the age of 12. At age 14 her cousin asked her for help to do a music class assignment where she had to write a song and put melody to it. Destiny gave her one of the songs she had previously written and the teacher was so impressed and asked if she was sure it was an original and not something that was main stream market.
After hearing this, Destiny’s confidence in her writing ability grew and she started performing these songs for her friends and family who were impressed. She says the first album she owned was given to her by her mother’s friend. It was by Shabba Ranks and from then on she couldn’t get enough of dancehall music. Lady Saw, Bounty Killer, Sizzla and Buju Banton, she says, are her favourite dancehall artistes.
According to Destiny, she is aiming for longevity in the business. “I know it takes a lot of hard work it’s not all glitz and glam but I am prepared … sleepless nights in the studio and the whole works. Teaming up with creative and talented people working together to inspire and thrill others is what I vision for myself,” said the lyricist.

U.S. Report: Jamaican Prime Minister Is 'Known Criminal Affiliate' Of Hunted Drug Lord

By RICHARD ESPOSITO, MARK SCHONE and LUIS MARTINEZ

As official reports surface of accused drug lord Christopher Coke's escape from his barricaded Kingston, Jamaica neighborhood, where Jamaican authorities have been attempting to arrest him for extradition to the U.S., ABC News has learned that a U.S. government report refers to Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding as a "criminal affiliate" of Coke.

Golding, who led resistance to Coke's extradition before public opinion forced him to reverse himself, is described in a document read to ABC News as a "known criminal affiliate" of Christopher "Dudus" Coke. According to official U.S. accounts, Golding's Jamaican Labour Party (JLP) was voted into power through "Coke's murderous and strong-arm tactics."
Recently, Golding and other senior Jamaican officials have been electronically intercepted talking to Coke inside his fortified redoubt, US authorities say.
The major police action to capture Coke began Monday morning. On Tuesday, U.S. authorities said they believed Coke had escaped through a ring of hundreds of cops and soldiers who had surrounded the West Kingston neighborhood of Tivoli Gardens. Jamaican and US authorities report that Coke may have slipped through police lines and escaped into one of two adjoining areas, either Denham Town or Jones Town.

WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT HIDING?

The security force was sent into Tivoli Gardens on Sunday and since then media personnel’s has been denied access to carry information from Tivoli by the security forces. There is no visuals coming out of Tivoli so people are now wondering what the state of the people in Tivoli is and how badly was it damage?

Mr. Vaz minister of Information stated on PBC Jamaica post cabinet meeting a few minutes ago that JIS the Jamaica Information Service was the only media that was allowed into Tivoli Gardens to carry a report. How ironic that the JIS is a Government owned station and so we will only be seeing what the Government wants us to see if not why then is other media houses were not allowed inside Tivoli Gardens, WE THE People are now asking the question what is the government hiding?

'DUDUS' STILL AT LARGE

BY KARYL WALKER

TIVOLI Gardens strongman Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is still at large despite a major
security dragnet imposed on the volatile community of Tivoli Gardens during a two-day operation by the security forces.
National Security Minister Dwight Nelson made the announcement during a press briefing at Prime Minister Bruce Golding's official residence, Vale Royal, this afternoon.
"Up to the last briefing I got the answer is no," Nelson told journalists.
The security forces stormed the community in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant on Coke, who is wanted by United States authorities on gun and drug running charges.
Official police reports are that 26 civilians, two police officers and a soldier have been killed during the outbreak of violence. Seven cops and four Jamaica Defence Force soldiers were also injured.
Army fatigues, ballistic vests, binoculars and a cache of guns and ammunition were recovered during the operation.
Colonel Rocky Meade, head of communications of the Jamaica Defence Force shot down claims that soldiers were burning bodies inside Tivoli Gardens.
"Based on our training I would be very surprised if those reports were true," Meade said.
He said the security forces used the necessary force to repel the threat posed to the state.
"The JDF owns no fighter jets but I can assure you that we used no more force than was necessary to protect our troops," Meade said.

STRESS IN KINGSTON CITY

WITH the ongoing standoff between security forces and gunmen in West Kingston, life in the city is still not back to normal.
Travelling to work today people would have noticed levels of traffic still lower than normal. Meantime the Jamaica Urban Transport Service (JUTC) announced that its service to downtown is still not to resume.
Businesses, including Air Jamaica, have closed their premises downtown. Meantime all schools in Kingston remain closed until further notice.
The Observer has been touring the city all morning including the trouble spot of Red Hills Road in St Andrew where police and soldiers repeated yesterday's work of clearing roadblocks.
Similar actions had to be undertaken in Spanish Town, St Catherine where public transport was delayed until the roads could be cleared.
In sections of Tivoli Gardens residents who have been penned in the crossfire between security forces and gunmen have been calling the Observer reporting that they have gone almost a day without food and water.
"From early this morning soldiers have been firing at buildings when people have been attempting to come out of their homes," said one angry female caller.
She claimed that most of the gunmen were either dead or have fled the community after security forces began their assault yesterday.
She appealed for the authorities to render some assistance. Government has made available buses to evacuate residents from the community.

VIOLENCE ON RED HILLS ROAD

Monday, May 24, 2010

POLICE and gunmen were this morning engaged in a gunfight along Red Hills Road as members of garrison communities loyal to powerful Kingston don, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke joined the fray of civil unrest in his support.
Assault rifle and shotgun blasts rang out along the normally busy thoroughfare of Red Hills Road from Sunday afternoon and continued this morning.
Rogue elements have erected blockades in the vicinity of Karl Samuda Boulevard near the community known as 'Common'.
More blockages were erected in the vicinity of Park Lane and the Emmanuel Gospel Assembly. Police said thugs chased away jerk chicken vendors and used their jerk pans to erect roadblocks. Tyres were also burnt in the streets.
The communities of Park Lane and Common are fiercely loyal to the ruling Jamaica Labour Party and are the main support bases of Industry Minister Karl Samuda's North Central St Andrew constituency.
"They blocked the road and the police went there to clear it. They fired on the police and the shooting lasted for some time," head of crime for the St Andrew North Police Division, Deputy Superintendent Altermoth 'Parra' Campbell told the Observer.
None of the officers were hurt in the incident.
Cops and gunmen also traded bullets along Mannings Hill Road at a roadblock in the vicinity of Clifton Boulevard.
Police have since cleared that blockage and a tense calm remains in the area.

GUNMEN SEIZE POLICE CAR

POLICE attempting to assist persons trapped at the Blood Bank on Slipe Pen Road in downtown Kingston were forced to abandon a police service vehicle after heavily-armed gunmen fired at them.
The cops fled the area on foot and left the marked police car which as then taken by the gunmen.
It is unclear if any of the cops have been injured.
Sections of the capital city have been under siege as armed thugs roam the city taking on police officers who attempt to clear road blocks that are popping up at various points.
At least four police stations have been shot up by gunmen who have vowed to defend to the death reputed Tivoli Gardens don Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
Coke is wanted in the United States on gun and drug running charges.

GUNMEN HAVE JOINED FORCES AGAINST SECURITY FORCE

POLICE this afternoon confirmed that gunmen from volatile communities have joined forces with criminal elements in Tivoli Gardens in a bid to protect embattled Tivoli Gardens strongman, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
In a release to the media this afternoon Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said the police were aware of the development and were preparing to respond appropriately.
"Images of barricades, other defensive positions and the aforementioned unprovoked attacks together with credible intelligence indicate that scores of criminals from several gangs across the island have joined criminal elements in Tivoli Gardens. It is now clear that criminal elements are determined to launch coordinated attacks on the security forces," the release stated.
The cops have also confirmed that a member of the Island Special Constabulary Force was shot in the hand during an attack on the Hannah Town police station in West Kingston. There are also reports of sustained gunfire at the Denham Town, Darling Street and Fletcher's Land police stations.
Residents of Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town have, since Monday, barricaded themselves inside their communities in a bid to keep out the security forces.
The blockages have now spread to other sections of the city as residents of other communities, including Rose Town, Fletcher's Land, Hannah Town and Majesty Gardens have joined the fray.

HANNAH TOWN POLICE STATION ABLAZE

POLICE have had to evacuate Hannah Town police station after the building came under sustained attack by gunmen.
Personnel had to be evacuated by a rescue unit after they ran out of bullets and the station set ablaze.
A policeman has also been shot and injured.

UPDATE: ROADBLOCKS INCREASE, GUNSHOTS LOUD IN WEST KINGSTON

By KIMMO MATTHEWS

ROADBLOCKS reaching as far as Heroes Circle were set up in Kingston this morning, and police came under fire as they tried to clear the debris.
At the Admiral Town Police Station on Slipe Pen Road, cops said they were on high alert, following attacks on cops from that station who tried to help clear the roadblocks.
The Observer news team is unable to get to the Denham Town Police Station which serves the Tivoli Gardens community because of roadblocks along Spanish Town Road.
The sound of gunshots can, however, be heard from the Observer's location near the St Andrew Technical High School.
The area has been tense since Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced last week that the process had been started to facilitate the extradition of Tivoli Gardens Don Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke.
Since then, Tivoli and Denham Town residents have mounted roadblocks barricading their communities from the police who need to enter to serve an arrest warrant on Coke.

DENNO MAKES BOLD STATEMENTS WITH NEW SINGLES

Make It, Mi Feel It and Dem Nuh Real are three of the current singles from Denno, the newest kid on the block who is eager and ready to make his mark on the music business.
Denno is signed to Master One Production, which has officially released the singer’s first set of singles on that record label. The tunes are enjoying enviable blasts on radio and also in the dancehall where Denno’s popularity is steadily increasing.

Both the record label and the artiste report that the response from the discriminating music-loving public has been encouraging, to say the least.

"We are on a mission to give the massives the type of music that opens the mind and makes people think," Denno explained. "So it's not surprising that the feedback is good ... but we still feel good," he added.

These songs fit nicely in a "reality" package and are typical of the kind of lyrics streaming from Denno's pen.

The singer says his writing is influenced by real-life events currently taking place in the world and the negative effect our lifestyle on the environment.

Denno has previously worked on projects with Earth Production Promotional label, for whom he did a collaboration with singer Ojah, called Prayer for the Haitians. The song has received heavy rotation both locally and internationally and helped to boost the artiste's visibility and profile. A supporting video has also been made for that single.

A graduate of the Bridgeport High School in Portmore, St Catherine, Denno writes all his material himself and has also assisted other artistes with writing their songs.

The singer, who is clean cut, says he is influenced by reggae icon Bob Marley, Cocoa Tea, Richie Spice, Queen Ifrica and Buju Banton, all of whom are Rastafarians.

"I pattern myself, lyrically, on some Jamaica's musical icons of yesteryear and also those who are making an impact currently. I look at their approach to work and what they have accomplished musically and set my sights there," Denno explained.

RED STRIPE, SUMFEST ... PARTNERS AGAIN

Reggae Sumfest and Red Stripe have joined forces once again, after Red Stripe's decision to stop sponsoring local live-music events.

In a controversial move in late 2008, brewing company Red Stripe announced its decision to withdraw sponsorship of live-music events which they claimed facilitated "violent and anti-social lyrics." Having been the title sponsor for Reggae Sumfest for six years prior to that decision, the reggae festival was left without a title sponsor as the company paused their sponsorship plan. Now Red Stripe has returned to show its support for the island's music and culture and to Reggae Sumfest.

Johnny Gourzong of Summerfest Productions, organisers of the event, is without a doubt pleased to have Red Stripe back on board. Gourzong said: "Very pleased, very happy. Red Stripe is playing a big role and are certainly one of the sponsors to come to our rescue this year along with Digicel, Wisynco, the Jamaica Tourist Board and the hotels like Iberostar. We're definitely welcoming them back."
According to Gourzong, the 'platinum sponsor', which Red Stripe has taken up this year, is the highest level of sponsorship for the event outside of the title sponsorship.
Marguerite Cremin, head of corporate relations for Red Stripe, told THE WEEKEND STAR, "Sumfest is a very integral part of music in Jamaica. A number of people are aligned to and has an affinity with Sumfest and we realised it has an integral part of celebration. Diageo is all about celebrating life and music is a part of that celebration."

commitment

In a release, Renee Wong, assistant brand manager for Red Stripe, explained that the return is only one part of its commitment to continue the development of the Jamaican people.
Wong said: "With our re-entry in the festival comes a new approach that promises to be a treat to our consumers. We will leverage the festival in a big way that only an iconic brand and company such as Red Stripe could. Jamaica can look forward to a fantastic Reggae Sumfest which will see tremendous engagement of consumers leading up to the much anticipated three-day festival."
The company came under fire from the dancehall community when it withdrew main sponsorship from Reggae Sumfest and Sting. In a statement released in 2008, Red Stripe stated: "Over the years, a very negative trend of glorifying violence has crept into some of the music, causing much consternation among well-thinking Jamaicans and others at home and abroad. This has far-reaching and damaging implications for the industry and for the country as a whole."
Adding: "While our most recent efforts through the Coalition of Corporate Sponsors have met with some measure of success, some performers continue to propagate, through their live performances, violent and anti-social lyrics. Red Stripe will not be party to this, and thus we have taken the very difficult decision of withdrawing sponsorship from live-music events."
According to Cremin, Red Stripe's decision to rejoin the sponsorship of Reggae Sumfest is due to an improvement they have seen in communication between themselves and the dancehall community. She said, "There has been an improvement in terms of communication between Diageo, the broadcasting community, the private sector and the music fraternity. We have reached a good place and are moving forward."
Cremin says there has been regular dialogue among themselves, the artistes, their managers who all view it as a "win-win situation." Sumfest kicks off on July 18 with the Beach Party.

REGGAE SUMFEST STILL ON

Contrary to rumours, the popular annual Reggae Sumfest festival, held annually, is still on for this summer.

In recent weeks, rumours have been spreading that Reggae Sumfest, which is usually held in Montego Bay, would not be staged this year due to a lack of sponsorship. However, when THE STAR spoke to Johnny Gourzong of Summerfest Productions, organisers of the event, he confirmed that the festival would in fact be held.
He said: "It is definitely confirmed that it will be kept. We had a number of challenges due to reduced sponsorship, and we had to find ways of being more creative and making it happen to its usual high standard."
The organisers are therefore appealing to stakeholders to work with them in finding creative solutions to the challenges to stage the 18th edition of the 'Greatest Reggae Festival on Earth'.
Gourzong added: "With the challenges being faced this year, we're just asking the service providers of the festival which includes the hotels, airlines, productions and artistes, to recognise the challenge and to make as many concessions as possible. We have to keep this festival alive, which has been a benchmark for the industry."
The festival will kick off on July 18 with a beach party which will be followed by three days of live performances, including a dancehall night and two international nights, at Catherine Hall.
The show has traditionally featured top reggae and dancehall performers, but hip-hop and rhythm and blues acts like Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Boyz II Men, Ne-yo, Keri Hilson, Jasmine Sullivan, Toni Braxton and Lionel Richie have also been featured.
According to Gourzong, a launch date for the festival has tentatively been set for June 9 in Kingston. He added that Reggae Sumfest is important to Jamaica's tourism package.
"The show is very important to the economy and tourism interests. Reggae Sumfest has been outstanding in reaching patrons from many countries; not only North America, but the United Kingdom and even as far as Australia," he said.
Reggae Sumfest provides an avenue for new and established local talent to demonstrate their prowess to an international audience, as well as a wide cross section of the Jamaican society.

WARRANT SIGNED FOR DUDUS’ ARREST

A warrant for the arrest of Tivoli Gardens strongman, Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke was signed this morning by a Resident Magistrate, the Observer has learnt.
The warrant gives the police Fugitive Apprehension Team the power to collar Coke who is wanted in the United States on drug and gun running charges.
Last night Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced that the authority to proceed with the extradition of Coke would be signed by Justice Minister and Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne.
The US State Department has since August last year requested that the Jamaican government extradite Coke, who they describe as a major trans-national narcotic kingpin.
Coke’s stronghold of Tivoli Gardens and Denham in West Kingston has been barricaded by his supporters who say they fear an invasion from the security forces.
The Observer is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further details as they become available.

GAY PROTEST AT EMANCIPATION PARK IN KINGSTON

HUMAN rights and gay activists held a short protest outside Emancipation Park in New Kingston this morning to coincide with today's International Day Against Homophobia.
Held between 8:00 to 8:30 am the protest was intentionally short to avoid a disturbance, said one human rights activist to whom the Observer spoke. He said that several drivers honked in support while others shouted their disapproval.
However the activist reported no violence against the protesters. He said that although not a homosexual, he took support in support of human rights in general.
"Just because in principle I believe in the universality of human rights and I'm against certain laws and public opinion in Jamaica," he explained.
Homosexuality is effectively criminalised in Jamaica by the anti-buggery laws, which are supported by public opinion.
Supported by international human rights groups, gay activists led by the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) have become increasingly vocal in recent times.

TWO DEAD IN SPANISH TOWN GANG WAR

BY COREY ROBINSON Observer Staff Reporter

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — Police here have increased their presence as the notorious One Order and Klansman gangs have turned up the heat.
The gangs have been engaged in and on again, off again gang feud for over a decade and have renewed rivalry resulting in the deaths of two men and the injury of four others in the old capital last night.
One of the dead men has been identified 61-year-old Peter Satchell, while the other is unidentified but a source in the town said he was a high-ranking member of the One Order gang.
Police report that about 10: pm yesterday gunmen peppered a car in which the One Order gang member was travelling along Featherbed Lane near St John's Road, killing him on the spot.
About an hour later, Satchell and other persons were at an establishment at the intersection of Waterloo Road and King Street when a gunman exited a brown Toyota Corolla motor car and fired on the group.
They were taken to hospital where Stachell was pronounced dead and the others admitted. Two of the injured persons have been listed as critical.
This morning a group of residents who gathered at the scene of the attack said they were taking steps to protect themselves.
"We have to pree every vehicle because we don't sure if them going circle back the place," one of the residents told the Observer.

DESTINY MAKING STRIDES WITH MOVE YUH WAISTLINE

Dancehall artiste Destiny is in no doubt as to where her destiny lies — in music. Therefore she is going all out to ensure that her latest single, Move Yuh Waistline gets all the attention it truly deserves.
A graduate of the popular Magnum-sponsored talent competition, Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, Destiny knows that she has the talent and the attitude needed to reach the top of her game.
“I know that this song is hitting the right note,” she says with confidence.
The song, which highlights the names of some of the top Montego Bay-based artistes such as Tommy Lee, Merrital Family (My Money Ha Ha) and Richest is impacting the Montego Bay dancehall scene. Although not yet officially released, the increasing popularity of Move Yuh Waistline has already done a world of good for the young artiste’s morale and has given her the attention she needs at this stage in her career.
“My fans, especially the MoBay crowd, love the song … radio is playing it and it really feels encouraging,” Destiny said.
Also receiving good rotation on the airwaves is her single Ghetto Love, which is on the Love and Joy rhythm produced by her brother Que da Wiz. Other artistes who have voiced on this rhythm are Gyptian, Hero and Vybz Kartel.
The "Killtress", as she was affectionately called by Bounty Killer after she defeated her opponent in several clash rounds on Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, says that Jamaica is filled with many talented individuals who do not get the break they deserve. She, however, will not stop until she accomplishes her goal, which is to make her name in the industry as a singer/songwriter.
