"I WILL BE EXONERATED" - KARTEL

Vybz Kartel has issued a statement to the press regarding a statement by the police naming him as a "major person of interest" in St. Catherine. He has consented to be interviewed by the police this morning.
I, like millions of other Jamaicans, have certain concerns about the potential violation of my civil rights and liberties during this State of Emergency, however, I will grant the police an audience this morning as they have declared me a "major person of interest", and placed my name on a list populated by a number of alleged criminals.
This is not the first time that the police force has attempted to smear my reputation based on half-baked assumptions and ridiculous rumours, but as it happened then, I know I will be exonerated once again. I have nothing to fear. Fear makes men believe the worst, but I believe in our justice system, however flawed it may be, and in the end, I will be vindicated. I remain confident that the security forces will act with professionalism in this matter.
I have engaged legal counsel to safeguard my rights, and the truth will prevail.
I know I will be exonerated.

Lauryn Hill Breaks Her Silence

Lauryn Hill hasn’t granted many interviews as of late, but NPR managed to score some one-on-one time with the reclusive singer during her visit to the Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa, Calif., earlier this month.
Reporter Zoe Chace was invited to ride in the former Fugees member’s car following her performance and soon found out that Ms. Hill, as she prefers to be called, is doing just fine despite the rumors.

On why she stopped putting out music: “There were a number of different reasons. But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. In fact, as musicians and artists, it’s important we have an environment—and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society. And it’s important that people be given the time that they need to go through, to grow, so that the consciousness level of the general public is properly affected. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates.”

On wanting to sing more: “I’m trying to open up my range and really sing more. With The Fugees initially, and even with Miseducation, it was very hip-hop—always a singing over beats. I don’t think people have really heard me sing out. So if I do record again, perhaps it will have an expanded context.Where people can hear a bit more.”

On why she started to perform again: “I don’t know if you know this, but I have five children. The youngest is 2 now, so she’s old enough that I can leave her for a period of time and know she’s going to be okay. That’s one reason. And I think it’s just time. I’m starting to get excited again. Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion. People got exposed to my passion through music and song first. I think people might realize, you know, ‘We love the way she sounds, we love the music, but I think we just love how fearless she is. How boundless she is, when it comes to what she wants to do.’ And I think that can be infectious.”

On staying healthy: “I think if I was created with such power or an ability, then what’s also been put in me is the blueprint for the responsibility part, as well. I have to take care of myself in order to take care of this gift, which has affected so many. I don’t treat it lightly. It’s important to me to be healthy and to be whole.”

Christopher Dudus Coke Turned Over to U.S. Officials

• Accused Jamaican Drug Lord Arrived in New York Thursday Evening

By RICHARD ESPOSITO and MARK SCHONE

Christopher Coke, the accused drug lord captured by Jamaican police Tuesday, was escorted by U.S. federal agents off a plane in suburban Westchester County, New York, at about 7 p.m. after his extradition from Jamaica.
He is expected to be arraigned in federal court in Manhattan on Friday.
Coke, also known as Dudus, who was wanted by the Southern District of New York on drug and weapons charges, was captured by Jamaican police on the outskirts of Kingston on Tuesday. He waived his right to judicial proceedings in Jamaica, according to a statement from the Justice Department, and was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals service and the DEA.
U.S. Marshals, DEA agents and federal prosecutors had worked hand in hand with senior Jamaican military and police officials in an effort to effect Coke's surrender and extradition. His attorney had contacted U.S. authorities on Monday advising that Coke was considering turning himself in to the U.S. It was the first communication that U.S. authorities had had with Coke's attorney in several weeks.
"We are relieved that Coke's arrest and transfer to New York was not marked by the violence that had gripped the streets of Jamaica for so many days," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. "We look forward to presenting our case to a jury in a Manhattan courtroom and bringing Coke to justice."

‘PRAY FOR ME’, ‘DUDUS’ BEGS JAMAICA

HOURS before his extradition to the United States, former Tivoli Gardens don Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke asked Jamaicans to pray for him.
In a two-page typewritten statement issued through his lawyer Tom Tavares Finson, Coke said he was leaving with a heavy heart, but was convinced he would be “vindicated”.
“Pray for me and God bless Jamaica,” Coke said. “I leave Jamaica and my family, in particular Patsy [mother Pauline ‘Patsy’ Halliburton], with a heavy heart, but fully confident that in due course I will be vindicated and returned to them.”
He said he had taken the decision to waive his rights to an extradition trial “on my own free will and have done so even though I’m of the belief that my case would have been successfully argued in the court of Jamaica”.
“I take this decision for I now believe it to be in the best interest of my family, the community of West Kingston and in particular the people of Tivoli and above all Jamaica,” he said.
Coke will be taken to the United States today, where he faces drug and gun-running charges.

NICKI MINAJ TONES DOWN THE SEXINESS

By T. Cole Rachel
Photography Aldo Rossi

Nicki Minaj might have been born in Trinidad and raised in Jamaica, Queens, but the 25-year-old rapper and one-woman style tornado makes music like she comes from another planet. Minaj’s Harajuku Barbie aesthetic and penchant for autographing the breasts of her devoted female fans notwithstanding, she is arguably one of the strongest female voices to emerge in hip-hop in the last decade. “I don’t mind being called a weirdo,” says Minaj. “There are a lot of people in hip-hop who are probably never going to get what I do. But, by just being myself, I end up touching a lot more people who might never have paid much attention to a female rapper.” Minaj has worked hard to establish her own voice, writing all her own material and not leaning on sex appeal. “I made a conscious decision to try to tone down the sexiness,” she says. “I want people—especially young girls—to know that in life, nothing is going to be based on sex appeal. You’ve got to have something else to go with that.” It was Minaj’s oversize personality and kaleidoscopic raps that drew the attention of her new friend and mentor Lil Wayne, who signed her to his Young Money label in 2009. Since then, Minaj’s progress on her hotly anticipated debut album, Massive Attack (due out this fall), has been slowed only by her popularity as a collaborator. She’s popped up on tracks for artists such as Usher, Robin Thicke, and Mariah Carey. “One of the biggest highlights of this year was being onstage with Jeezy, Wayne, and Drake in the middle of Jay-Z’s set at Madison Square Garden,” says Minaj. “And not only did we do a song together, but I was in a video with Mariah Carey! I still haven’t gotten over that!”.

I-OCTANE SHOOTS VIDEO FOR MY LIFE

I-Octane recently wrapped up the video shoot for his popular single My Life. The video was shot on location at the Lindsay Crescent studio in Kingston and is now in the editing stages.
Directed by Asha Mchail and the single produced by DJ Frass, it is expected to come with a strong storyline. The artiste says that fans can look out for “something that will depict the everyday twist and turns of life.”
“You know life comes with a lot of surprises – some good some bad. While the video will not be going into all that drama…you will still be getting a ‘little taste’ of my life,” pointed out I-Octane on his upcoming video which he says is expected to be premiering soon.
My Life is presently on the Jamaican charts and feedback coming from the streets is that it is one of the most requested songs in the dancehall right now.
Other singles that has been garnering success for the artiste is Lose A Friend and Think A Little Time
I-Octane recently recorded the song Hold You in My Arms for radio jock turned producer ZJ Chrome. The song is featured on the Cardiac Bass rhythm project.

'DUDUS' BEING HELD IN SECURE FACILITY, SAYS JAMAICAN POLICE

• Miller was transporting him to US embassy

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is now being held in a secure facility according to the police.

Coke was held earlier this afternoon in a police spot check at Ferry on Mandela Highway, in St. Catherine. The Reverend Al Miller was accompanying him. He was then transferred to a secure facility.

Coke is wanted in the US on drug and gunrunning charges.

In a press briefing being held at the Commissioner's Office on Old Hope Road, Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington said that they are looking forward to starting legal proceedings within the next 48 hours.

Ellington again appealed to Al. Miller to turn himself in to the police. He told the press briefing that no member of the police high command was aware of Miller's plan to turn in Coke without going through the legal process.

Ellington said that the police are investigating as to why Miller was let go and they had several questions to ask him.

He said that Coke was in good condition.

Ellington also appealed to members of the public to remain calm.

In the meantime the Police High Command has again raised the threat level from criminal violence against their members and assets to extremely high. This means there is anticipation of imminent violent attacks on members as well as physical assets.

This upgrading of the threat level is based on intelligence suggesting that detained and displaced criminals as well as other criminal criminals are planning attacks on Security Forces personnel and assets.

The police is urging all members to take seriously this threat assessment and raise their level of awareness and anticipation on and off duty.

Rihanna Working with Producer Alex Da Kid on New Album

By Georgette Cline

Creating a record to top the success of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” is a challenge Alex Da Kid is willing to take on. The 26-year-old producer has been crafting beats for the Bajan singer’s’ forthcoming album.

Rihanna may be in the early stages of recording her fifth opus, but she’s already calling on Alex to craft records to her liking. In the past, the London native made beats specifically thinking about the pop star’s tastes. “When I first started working with [Rihanna], I was doing that,” reveals Alex, who produced “Love the Way You Lie,” her collaboration with Eminem.

As time progressed, the “Airplanes” producer took a more organic approach. “I don’t try to directly mold [a record] to her ’cause you never really know what she’s thinking,” he tells Rap-Up.com. “She wants input from other people. She doesn’t always want to come up with the ideas. She wants talented people to help come up with ideas. I just do what feels natural.”

Alex has teamed up with Rihanna on several records, none of which he can name nor describe yet. “We’ve done a couple,” he admits. “We’ve got a few good ones that will probably end up on the album.”

When brainstorming ideas to make a beat, Alex’s approach is rather simple. “[Artists] never want to do something like their last album; they want to do something fresh and new,” he states. “I just do whatever I feel like is a hot song.”

MELLOQUENCE DOES MUSIC VIDEO FOR TAKE YOU HOME SINGLE

A combination of the words ‘mellow’ and ‘eloquence’ has given rise to Melloquence, a singjay who says his name speaks for itself. A 2008 Top 10 finalist in the talent quest, Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall, Melloquence is currently signed to Big Already Entertainment, for whom he has been voicing singles while honing his performance skills. One of the singles commanding air time is Take You Home, and the artiste is quite excited at the possibilities. “This song is being embraced by the people and we have been encouraged to do the video,” he said. Directed by Janelle Dyer of Scorpio 21, the video had its television premiere last weekend and so far response has been quite positive. “When I saw the storyboard, it was something similar to what I had in mind for the song, and it’s really a nice video, even if I say so myself,” Melloquence said. “It is a club setting and it very much to the point. There’s nothing for anyone to have to guess and spell about,” he said. Other singles in rotation for the artiste are Royal Woman, produced by Dr Dizzle and Heart Cries Out, which features Classical Esca. “Right now things are looking up. I am comfortable in myself and have every confidence in my management team,” he stated. The Charliemount High School past student, whose real name is Ramone Drake, writes all his material himself and has worked on projects with other artistes including Tanya Stephens, Gentleman, I-Eye, Buju Banton and Sizzla.

EDGY, PARTY RIDDIM FOR DIGICEL 2010 SUMFEST CAMPAIGN

Digicel Jamaica, a main sponsor of Reggae Sumfest since 2001, has partnered with the talented and versatile producer, Demarco to create a hot, new riddim that will be the catalyst behind the company's Sumfest campaign this year.
"So far, the riddim features nine of dancehall's hottest acts including I-Octane, Tifa, Ding Dong, Liquid, Bugle and D'Angel," shared Shelly-Ann Curran, senior sponsorship manager at Digicel.
Speaking to Demarco on the inspiration behind the production of this riddim, he explained, "I actually got a call from Digicel saying they were looking for something edgy, something with a party vibe that will excite and entertain Jamaica. So the riddim was created with all of that in mind, plus ensuring that it represented Digicel's innovative spirit."

Demarco also made note of the kind of artistes that are featured on the production, saying that "they are recognised as being among some of the most futuristic artistes that represent the next generation in Jamaican music. Overall it's a good project".
In the meantime, Digicel was still mum on what their Sumfest campaign for 2010 will entail.
"We'll be unveiling the entire campaign at the Sumfest media launch, but it's going be an exciting summer with Digicel," closed Shelly Ann Curran.

SNOOP DOGG FINALLY GRANTED ENTRY TO THE U.K.

by Danielle Harling

After what seemed like a never-ending battle with U.K. immigration authorities rapper Snoop
Dogg has finally been granted a visa to visit the country. The Wall Street Journal reports that Snoop was informed of the decision last week.

The decision to allow Snoop to return to the U.K. couldn’t have come at a better time. In the coming weeks, the Cali-based rapper will perform at the renowned Glastonbury Festival, a concert in London’s Hyde Park, and a charity event in Manchester.

According to Snoop’s lawyer, if he was unable to perform at those shows because of visa issues he could have possibly lost somewhere near half a million dollars.

“This is a major coup for the renewal of his relationship with the British immigration authorities and justifies the approach he has taken over the last three years to clear his name and reputation,” said Snoop’s lawyer in a letter sent to immigration authorities.

Following the ban Snoop received after a scuffle and consequent arrest at London’s Heathrow Airport he attempted to visit the country again in 2007, but was denied entry.

DENNO’S MAKE IT AND MI FEEL IT ‘A SHOT’

Make It and Mi Feel It, two of the latest singles from Master One Production artiste, Denno, have been getting a lot of love from FM radio and also from the selectors in the dancehall.
“The songs are doing good … we’ve been getting a lot of requests,” Denno reports with a smile. “In other words dem a shot,” he said by way of further explanation.
It’s not hard to imagine why these songs are finding their way into the hearts of the people. Not only are they conscious and thought-provoking, Denno sings them with a conviction that is piercing and memorable. In fact, Denno says he always wanted to be a deejay, but he realised early on that the types of lyrics which he pens are best suited to a singer rather than a deejay.
“I realise that for me to bring out the right words it’s not about the fast spitting out of lyrics … it’s all about slowing it down so that people can hear the words, listen and learn,” says the singer.
According to Denno, his management team is now working on video projects for the singles.
“We hope to release the videos by the end of this month. We are assembling the video crew and making sure that the video reflects the mood and tone of the songs,” the artiste said.
Asked how he felt about the early success of the singles, he noted, “I am happy that things are moving in the right direction and with hard work and Master One Productions giving me their total support things can only get better.”

DIGICEL PARTNERS WITH SUMFEST AGAIN

Digicel has signed on as the official telecommunications sponsor for Reggae Sumfest for the 10th consecutive year. In what is gearing up to be a truly exciting season, Digicel has promised to deliver "superior value and amazing offers" to its over two million customers and Sumfest patrons, a release from the company said.
"Reggae Sumfest is a staple in Jamaican entertainment and Digicel is excited about our 10th year of partnership with what is truly the greatest reggae show on earth and this is a testament to Digicel's commitment to supporting our culture and our heritage," commented Shelly-Ann Curran, senior sponsorship manager at Digicel, about their involvement.
Reggae Sumfest 2010 will take place from July 18 through 24 in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay and organisers have already confirmed some of the most talented local and international artistes to be on its line-up.
"Last year Digicel brought Divas of Dancehall campaign to Sumfest patrons, which was a huge success. This year will definitely be bigger and better," Curran continued.
When asked what Sumfest patrons can expect from Digicel this year, Curran shared that cellphone manufacturer and innovator Motorola is on board with them this year and will be an integral part of the company's marketing campaign around Sumfest.
"We can't let the cat out of the bag just yet, but what I will say is that it will be explosive, it will be everything that an energetic, hip, and cutting-edge-out-of-the-box brand like Digicel could conceive, and something that we will deliver with Motorola," Curran said.
Among the acts confirmed for this year's Reggae Sumfest are Chris Brown, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, Jah Cure, Elephant Man, I-Octane, Assassin, Konshens, Stacious, Chino, Tessanne Chin, Gramps Morgan and Tifa.

DESTINY PROUD OF HER FALSE HAIR AND FALSE EYELASH

Rising singjay, Destiny, is one girl who makes no bones about ensuring that she grabs a position on the much-talked-about “look good chart”. In her newest single, entitled Duppy Bat, she shouts it out loud that she proud of her false hair and false eye-lash.
Just seeing the title of the song without listening to it could make one walk away with the wrong impression, but one listen clears up any confusion. In this song she warns girls not to “mek nuh bwoy tek oonu fi nuh duppy bat”. A ‘duppy bat’ is a girl who makes no effort to ‘fix up’ herself by putting in hair extensions, weaves and other “niceties of life”.
Destiny fiercely defends the wearing of “hair and false eyelash” as she recounts her trip to the wholesale and her efforts at bartering wiht the ‘Chiney man’ as she stocks up on her necessary goodies. She makes it clear that no matter how unattractive a girl may be — “Gal coulda ugly, face big like pig” — it is possible for her to look good.
According to Destiny, this song is just a reflection of what goes on day in day out, and it’s not just about ghetto life or uptown and downtown.
“All women, regardless of where they come from, try to enhance their beauty. Even those who you didn’t think would wear false hair, when you check it out they are the ones who have it in, although some of them try to disguise it. This song is also telling those girls who would want to try to experiment, but are afraid, that there is nothing wrong with wearing false eyelash, for example,” Destiny says.
According to her, it’s all about making a fashion statement and no woman should look like a ‘duppy bat’.

I-OCTANE’S LOSE A FRIEND GETS NEW LIFE

The recent turn of events since the State of Emergency in Kingston was announced and the death of Voicemail member O’Neil Edwards may be the contributing factors for the reason I-Octane’s single Lose A friend is now enjoying ‘new life’ in the dancehall. The single, which to date has been his most popular song is now one of the most requested songs in the past few days in the clubs and on many of the reggae programmes.
“I have been receiving calls from selectors and disc jocks about the number of requests coming in for it,” I-Octane said. He pointed out that a lot of people have been losing friends during this rough time that the country is going through, surmising that they are using the song to express the emotions they feel.
“At some point in our lives we all have lost someone who is dear to us, everyone can relate to this song and that’s the reason a lot of persons are relating to it,” the singjay said.
Lose a Friend peak at number one on most charts and still enjoying a presence on some charts such as Jamaica Music Countdown Stampede street chart and Yardflex Top 10.

DING DONG BARRED FROM TRINIDAD

• Deejay, dancer said to be a threat to Trinidadian society

IT seems to be a recurring theme: Jamaican artiste barred from entering Caribbean territory. This time the artiste is deejay and dancer Ding Dong, and the Caribbean island is Trinidad.
Ding Dong, who was scheduled to perform at an event in the twin-island republic on Saturday, did not get very far, as on reaching the Piarco International Airport in Port-of-Spain, he was informed that he would not be allowed to enter the country.
It is alleged that the artiste has been placed on a list of Jamaican artistes who have been banned from performing in Trinidad & Tobago. One Chat! source said these artistes, including Ding Dong, have been deemed a threat to Trinidadian society and therefore cannot be allowed into the country.
Last night, Chat! caught up with the artiste, who was still bewildered by the actions of the Trinidadian authorities. “Fi tell you de truth me can’t even explain wha’ go down a Trinidad... mi can’t tell you,” was all Ding Dong could say.

SKENG DON'S HOUSE SEARCHED

AS the search for wanted fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke intensifies, police yesterday swooped down on the home of popular Manchester businessman and People's National Party supporter, Kenneth 'Skeng Don' Black.
The cops went to Black's home in the upscale community of Ingleside in Mandeville and searched the house for more than an hour based on information that Coke was hiding out there.
Five persons were found inside the house but none were of interest to the cops who left empty-handed.
In a bid to execute an arrest warrant on Coke, the police have searched several houses in upscale neighbourhoods including two belonging to Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie.

ONEIL EDWARDS WILL BE BURIED ON SATURDAY

The funeral service for Voicemail member Oneil Edwards will be held on Saturday, June 5th at the Church on the Rock, Clifton Avenue, Kingston beginning at 10 a.m.
Oneil's body will be interred at Meadowrest. The Voicemail group is known for hits such as Let's Dance, Wacky Dip, Weddy Time and Bring You Body Come.
He was shot five times, once in the head, during an attack as he attempted to enter his home at Belloc Avenue in the middle class community of Duhaney Park on May 10th.
He had been listed as critical even though he was said to be breathing on his own, but eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The main suspect in the shooting was found dead in the Chancery Hall community on Tuesday, May 11. Police said the unidentified man managed to escape a dragnet set up to nab him the previous day.
Edwards' cellular phone was found in the dead man's possession. The body was clad in green short pants, white T-shirt and blue slippers and was found on Lady Hamilton Close with several gunshot wounds.
A second suspect was picked up by the Manchester Police in that parish on the following night and is being transported to Kingston where he will be questioned by senior homicide investigators.

DUDUS' BROTHER LIVITY IN POLICE HANDS

Leighton Coke, the brother of alleged West Kingston crime lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, has handed himself in to the police.

Leighton, who is otherwise called Livity, reportedly turned himself in a short while ago at the Half Way Tree Police station in St Andrew, Jamaica.

A source at the station said he was accompanied by religious leader, Reverend Al Miller.

His name was among those issued on a police wanted list last week.
Also in custody, since Saturday, is Justin O'Gilvie, the business partner of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

O'Gilvie is a member of the Presidential Click business and one of several alleged members of the Shower Posse gang – reputedly lead by Christopher Coke – who cops included among a list of persons asked to turn themselves in.

The other alleged Shower Posse members on the list are Harry Mcleod, also called 'Harry Dog'; Prince Bucket, also called 'Tugman'; and Paul KirkPatrick, otherwise called 'Teddy Paul'.
